My Leadership Style - Reflection Subject: Leadership Columbia University My parents have conservative family values. There may be debates about liberalism and conservatism but there cannot be debate about the need for family values. As a teen my belief in family values was strong and to take care of my family was among my biggest purpose. I am the oldest of five siblings in my family. As the oldest, I had certain responsibilities toward my brothers and sisters. These responsibilities were given by my parents. Perhaps they thought I had grown up faster and I could take responsibilities. Initially I was given responsibility for small tasks like making sure that my youngest sibling had his milk on time or to ensure that my brothers and sisters did not fight among themselves. Later my responsibilities started increasing as my mother did not used to keep well. I had to ensure that kids did their homework on time or to hear of their problems. There were times when it seemed that my siblings preferred to discuss their problems with me rather than with our mother. Time has never waited. We have today grown up, but I do still get calls from my siblings. If they face any problem, they look toward me for solution. They trust my solutions even though I am no expert. Perhaps they trusted something else and trust something else.
I never shared their concerns with my parents until they wanted. In this way I was always honest to them with their information. They prefer me as a counselor because they know that even if they make any mistake, I would not scold them. I would not inform to our parents. I do not encourage bad behavior either, but I hear them and try to correct their mistakes by explaining them the problem in detail. I am honest with them but at the same time I do not leak their information. I did realize during the course learning that my relationship with my siblings could be considered as authentic style of leadership. Perhaps, even without theoretical knowledge of the same I could practice this style of leadership because of family values given to me. These values were effective in family environment as I also had a purpose. To think and achieve best for my family was a purpose. It is said that in Authentic style of leadership, Individuals should have purpose, values, heart, relationship and self-discipline (Ünal, 2019). Perhaps the presence of all these factors help me in leading my siblings and acting as their counselors. I would want to continue to be their authentic counselor by continuing to practice authentic style of leadership. I have a good opinion of another style of leadership too. This is servant style of leadership and I do believe that it can work very well in knowledge industry. The leader must be servant of goals and values and should want to serve people working under him or her (Sullivan, 2019). I do think that this leadership style can work in my professional status. This is because I do feel that it can help me unleash the potential of my sub- ordinates. A good leader can be as good as his or her team. If individuals could realize
