“Nature” Photography

Competition

Witham Running Club, March 2020

Judging Considerations I recognise that the competition is an extra to your main activity of running and using only mobile phones so have tried to judge sympathetically, giving constructive feedback where I think an image can be improved, and not being overly sensitive to image resolution or colour issues. I mention “thirds” quite often in my feedback; this is a compositional rule in photography that can make images, especially landscapes, more pleasing if the horizon sits on a third they way up or down the image. That being said, I have been impressed by the selection of images and some wouldn’t look out of place in a photography competition. Where a runner has clearly given some thought to an image we have undoubtedly been rewarded. Finally, photography is a subjective – a different judge would likely have a different set of contenders and winners. Well Done all!

Commended The only black and white image in the selection and this shows on a day with maybe not the most interesting light switching to B&W can give an image more impact and really allow composition to do the work for you. I would consider cropping out the bottom 20% to stop the lighter log distracting the eye.

Commended A nice macro shot of a honey bee gathering nectar. The blossom is beautiful this time of the year and the photographer has captured this well. It is a little difficult to focus on the subject flowers and bee as it is so similar to the background. Had they not defocused the background it would have been even more difficult. Perhaps a different angle would have helped. And it would have been nice to see the face of the bee.

Commended The photographer has clearly thought about their shot and approached their subject nicely here. Getting low to the ground offers a new perspective and defocusing the background makes the subject stand out. Also, placing the subject off centre makes it more pleasing and even though the background is out of focus, the road acts as a leading line to the still visible pretty sky. Well done.

Place This is a nice landscape image. It makes good use of negative space, the path leads your eye to the nice looking tree which is the main focus of the image. The horizon is level and on a third.

Place Winner A superb action shot of a swan that I suspect is taking off from a river, as they take a while to get going, giving you more time to get ready! It looks perfectly lined up; the swan stands out against the darker bank and it’s shadow, the reflection of the still water nicely reflects the swan and trees and the early morning or early evening light gives a nice tone to the image. Compositionally the scene is nice as the swan is of centre with plenty of space to move out of the frame and the horizon is on a third. The water splashing up gives it a sense of action. Really good, well done!
