Now to look deeper into the genetic ally modified embryos, you
must understand how it works. To be able to change embryos
genetics, a Crispr-Cas9 is used, which basically cuts out a type of
gene and replaces it with another. H owever, this process can be
used for different reasons, one is that of removing hereditary
diseases, another is to create design er babies. Regardless, of how

Introduction

Have you ever thought about what a perfect person would look like, and what is needed to achieve this image? Hello and good morning, I am Katherine Diedericks. Today, I am going to be talking about genetically modifying embryos and how this relates to Catholic Social Teaching! Let us break it down! Genetically modified embryos are changing embryos with different genes. Embryos being the stage after the egg and sperm have meet but hasnt developed fully yet. TERM 2

DEFINITION 2

But what about the Catholic Social Teachings to explain this

simply it is the way the Catholic Church has set how we

should live our lives.

TERM 3

First Body Paragraph

DEFINITION 3 Now to look deeper into the genetically modified embryos, you must understand how it works. To be able to change embryos genetics, a Crispr-Cas9 is used, which basically cuts out a type of gene and replaces it with another. However, this process can be used for different reasons, one is that of removing hereditary diseases, another is to create designer babies. Regardless, of how the new advancement is carried out there are many opportunities and threats that the advancement faces. TERM 4

First Body Paragraph End

DEFINITION 4 An opportunity presented is the chance to help cure diseases by simply removing the disease related gene. Another opportunity is to create a child that has specific features or look which can be called as creating designer babies. A threat though is that of the harmful after effects that might occur as well creating a new life form. There are many different strengths and weakness when considering the economic, social and environmental side of the advancement. TERM 5

Second Body Paragraph

DEFINITION 5 Let us begin with economic weakness and strengths of genetically modified embryos. The weakness of having the treatment that costs thousands of dollars, this isnt something most ordinary families cant afford so, the economic gap between the rich and poor widens. The poor might include people like you and me, people who can provide for yourself but dont have the money to spend it on unnecessary items.

Second Body Paragraph End

However, there are positives when looking at the economic

areas of this advancement. As this advancement becomes

more popular with people spending their own money on it

technology funding can then be used for other scientific

advancement. Therefore, the weakness of the economic side

of the advancement outweighs the positives.

TERM 7

Third Body Paragraph

DEFINITION 7 Moreover, another point to look at is that of the social strengths and weakness of the advancement. A social weakness is that of human equality becoming non-existent. King, the founder of Human Genetics Alert states, A society in which rich peoples children get biological advantages over other children allows the basic notions of human equality to go out the window! This statement indicates that when the advancement is used in any way it will affect those who dont have the opportunity to access the treatment/advancement and it gets rid of their equality as one sector of the population has an upper hand. TERM 8

Third Body Paragraph End

DEFINITION 8

There are some positives though, one being when people

who have had hereditary diseases removed, it means instead

of being segregated from the community they can instead be

part of the community. Therefore, when arguing the social

strengths and weakness its equal, meaning the decision to

continue the advancement would be based on personal

reasons.

TERM 9

Fourth Body Paragraph

DEFINITION 9 Lastly, let us look at environmental strengths and weaknesses. An environmental weakness is the science behind this technology is still very new, so the genetic engineering can present an ecological issue. A release of an engineered species or human can cause an imbalance in the ecology of a place. Having an accident with the engineering could also cause the creation of a new bacteria or virus which could lead to a serious epidemic when release. TERM 10

Fourth Body Paragraph End

DEFINITION 10

This topic doesnt provide any real strengths as you cant

ensure that a human that has been changed and wont

somehow affect the environment, therefore the weakness

support removing the advancement.

Eighth Body Paragraph End

As the idea of creating designer babies could mean the elimination of specific features as it is considered that it isnt beautiful enough to fit the perfect person. Does this mean that we are treating everyone with respect dont think so. As we are basically saying that if you have blonde hair and blue eyes youre are beautiful. But if you have lots of freckles you arent beautiful. So even if this genetic modification cures disease, what is to say that people with diseases arent in Gods image, hence the advancement doesnt support the teaching. TERM 17

Conclusion

DEFINITION 17 To summarise, the information overload, I have essentially broken down what genetically modified embryos means and how it relates to the Catholic Social Teaching. At first looked at how the advancement had many strengths and weakness across economic, environmental and social areas. Not to mention that there are many opportunities and threats associated with modifying embryos with genes TERM 18

Conclusion End

DEFINITION 18 Finally, we looked at Catholic Social Teachings and how three of these relate to the new technological advancement, comparing it to the dignity of the human person, preferential option for the poor and stewardship of creation. All of these facts help us conclude that the advancement of genetically modifying embryos goes against the Catholic Social Teachings.
