NFHS Softball 2025 Rules
Pitch touches batter - ✔✔Immediate dead ball. Batter to 1B if
not required to avoid pitch. Runners advance if forced. If batter
swings it is a strike. If batters leans into pitch and in strike zone
it is a strike. If pitch was in box but avoidable and batter makes
no attempt to move, it is a ball.
Illegally batted ball - ✔✔Bat ball with foot on plate or outside
of box completely. Immediate dead ball. Batter is out. Runners
return.
Ball hit twice - ✔✔Immediate dead ball. If over fair territory
batter is out. If in box, foul ball. Runners return.
Uncaught foul fly - ✔✔Immediate dead ball. Runners return.
Spectator interference - ✔✔Immediate dead ball. Out or bases
awarded by umpire judgment to nullify interference.
Interference by runner - ✔✔Immediate dead ball. Interferer is

Pitch touches batter - ✔✔Immediate dead ball. Batter to 1B if not required to avoid pitch. Runners advance if forced. If batter swings it is a strike. Batter is out and if interference prevented possible double play, runner closest to home is out. Other runners return to last base touched at time of interference. Fair ball over fence or prevented by spectator or player detached equipment - ✔✔Immediate dead ball. Award all bases to batter.

Thrown ball becomes blocked ball - ✔✔Immediate dead ball. Runners awarded 2 bases from time of release. Pitched ball becomes blocked - ✔✔Immediate dead ball. Award all runners one base form time of pitch. Umpire handles live ball - ✔✔Immediate dead ball. Runners return to bases last attained at time of interference. Fly ball caught by fielder who leaves field of play with at least one foot. - ✔✔Immediate dead ball. All runners awarded one base from time ball became dead. Live ball intentionally carried, kicked or thrown (overthrow) into dead ball territory - ✔✔Immediate dead ball. All runners awarded two bases from time of throw, or time of action. Offensive team calls time, says or does something to disrupt pitcher - ✔✔Immediate dead ball. No runners may advance. Team warning, next offense offender is ejected.

Infielder intentionally drops fly ball, line drive or bunt with at least 1B occupied and less than 2 outs. - ✔✔Immediate dead ball. Batter is out. Runners return to bases. Illegal pitch, not released. - ✔✔Immediate dead ball. Ball awarded to batter. Intentional base on balls - ✔✔Immediate dead ball. 1B awarded to batter, runners remain at bases unless forced. Base runner leaves base before pitch released - ✔✔Immediate dead ball. No pitch declared. Runner is out. Quick pitch before batter ready - ✔✔Immediate dead ball. No pitch declared. All action nullified. Fielder loses possession and ball enters dead ball area. - ✔✔Immediate dead ball. All runners awarded one base from last base touched at time ball entered dead ball area.

Ball hits loose equipment of team on defense - ✔✔Immediate dead ball. All runners advance two bases. Batter interference with catcher attempting putout - ✔✔Immediate dead ball. Batter-runner fails to advance to 1B and enters dugout - ✔✔Immediate dead ball. Batter-runner is out. Other runners return to base occupied at time of infraction. Illegal pitch (released) - ✔✔Delayed dead ball. Pitch called ball if not hit. If hit or walk and all runners do not advance one base, then offense get choice of results of play or penalty of called ball. Obstruction of batter by catcher or fielder - ✔✔Delayed dead ball. If batter and all runners advance at least one base, obstruction cancelled, if not, offensive coach gets choice of results of play or award of batter to first and advance runners if forced.

Obstruction - ✔✔Delayed dead ball. OBS of batter - awarded 1B. Of other runner, awarded base they would have reached based on umpire judgement Touching batted ball with detached players equipment - ✔✔Delayed dead ball. Award all runners 3 bases from time of pitch Touching thrown ball with detached players equipment - ✔✔Delayed dead ball. Award all runners 2 bases from time of throw. If it is pitched ball, award one base from time of pitch. Umpire inference with catcher throwing ball - ✔✔Delayed dead ball. If runner is not put out, return runner to base occupied before infraction. Contact ball with illegal glove - ✔✔Delayed dead ball. Offensive team has choice to take result of play or return all runners to bases, place batter back to bat with previous count. Deliberately removing helmet in live-ball territory while ball is live - ✔✔Delayed dead ball. Team warning. Subsequent offense results in player and head coach restricted to dug out.
