Survey steps: ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ: 1. Evaluate most current previous survey

  1. Select instrument based on expected conditions
  2. Perform survey
  3. Abnormal results? No- Brief workers to support work as needed - complete survey map/forms Yes- Stop work if required - Inform supervision of conditions - Implement supervision instructions to mitigate hazards - complete survey map/forms Required Info on surveys ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ: - Contact & 30 cm dose rates chest high from source (Include other heights (Knee, waist, head) if they are higher than the chest dose rate)
  • General area dose rates
  • LDWA
  • Date/Time/Location
  • Survey Instrument Serial #
  • Surveyor name

What to survey: ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ: Contact and 30cm dose rates of known and potential sources (Pipes, elbows, valves, penetrations, spills, transfer lines, etc) and general area dose rates as well as contamination levels if in a CA. If dose rates are greater than 100 mrem/hr between the knees and head: ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ: Determine if the Dosimetry needs to be relocated or if additional Dosimetry is needed

  • Identify the source (overhead pipes, floor pipes, or Highly Contaminated surfaces)
  • Measure the dose rates at heights of knees, waist, chest, and head near the source where the worker may be positioned
  • If the higher dose rates are not at the chest, record the chest dose rates along with the higher dose rates and annotate them based on the body location. How to measure Beta dose rates in areas with known or expected contamination levels greater than 500,000 dpm/100cm^2 (Open primary reactor system components, drained rad waste tanks, and reactor cavities): ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ: 1. Scan the surface with OW to find the highest radiation levels
  1. Perform OW and CW survey as close to the surface as possible
  2. Calculate betta dose rate by (OW-CW) X Beta correction factor (provided by RP supervision or on the instrument calibration label)
  3. Also measure OW and CW @ 30cm for Gamma and Beta dose rates

What does the DOT require for shipping surveys? ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ: A minimum survey of 300 cm^ 2 How to perform a small area Disc Smear: ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ: - S shape within 100 cm^ 2 applying moderate pressure

  • If an object has less than 100cm^2, wipe the entire surface
  • Estimate the SA ratio to 100cm^2 for dpm/100cm^2 or label as dpm/smear How to perform a Large Area Smear: ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ: Floor- use cloth mop Box/container/equipment- cloth smear entire surface
  • Suspend smear if cloth becomes wet or full of dust, dirt, or debris
  • Do not use a cloth if the surface is so rough that it rips the cloth when wiping
  • Wipe an area greater than 5X the SA of the wipe to obtain a threshold of less than 1Kdpm/100cm^
  • Frisk the wipe where the background is less than 200cpm
    • If the count rate is less than 100ncpm - repeat wiping until undetected OR complete a smear survey to identify contamination and decon as needed.
    • If the count rate is greater than 100ncpm - perform smear survey and decon as needed. Record the large area smear, postings, and the highest ncpm count from the LAS. Record the results from the disc smear, and the post-decon results to justify the downposting of the area.

How to perform a DRP survey: ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ: - Use a cloth wipe of a tacky roll in areas greater than 100K dpm/100cm^ (Typically HCA's)

  • Direct frisk the cloth (Use collimator if available)
  • Isolate and contain the particle
  • Survey with an OW and CW
  • By/a ratio <10 = Fuel Fragment
  • By/a ratio >30 = Corrosion product
  • Submit the particle for gamma spect How to analyze a smear with a pancake GM detector: Beta/Gamma ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ: - Ensure the background is < 200 cpm
  • Center detector 1/2 from smear
  • Subtract the background from the Gross Count Rate = ncpm
  • Divide ncpm/Efficiency factor (usually 10%) = dpm/100cm^ How to analyze a smear with an ion chamber: ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ: - center window over smear and perform CW and OW survey close to the smear
  • (OW-CW) X (Beta correction factor) = mrad/hr Alpha Level 1 Req:
  • G - Noble Gas
  • BZ - Buffer Zone Smear/Contamination symbol: ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ: O: accompanied by a number inside to associate it with the smear number on the survey notes that show measurements Dose Rate symbol ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ: *# / # : the number with an asterisk is for contact readings, the number alone is for readings at 30 cm Hot Spot symbol ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ: "HS": accompanied by dose rate numbers placed adjacent to the "HS" Neutron dose rate symbol ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ: "N" : Accompanied by a number. ( 50 N = 50 mrem/hr Neutron) Beta symbol ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ: "B" accompanied with a single number or dose rates (50B = 50mrad/hr) or (B *#/#) Radiological boundary symbol ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ: XXX or - - - accompanied with the letters "CA, HCA, RCA, LHRA," etc.

Step off pad symbol ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ๐Ÿ—ธ: Rectangle with the letters "SOP" inside
