When people think of Brazil, usually the first things that come to mind
are; soccer (football) Championships, extra vagant parades, beautiful
women , and hair waxing. However, ther e are number of interesting
things that you probably dont know about the country. This list will
uncover some of the most intriguing facts about Brazil, that I came across
in my research. Whether it's Brazil electing n ot one, but two, animals into
political office in the past. The creative ways Brazil gives prison inmates
the chance to lesson their sentences. Or the important jobs dolphins and
geese hold in Brazilian communities. Brazil d oes things a little different
than we do here in the states.

It's important to research other countries, like Brazil's,
culture to understand how diversity in law, politics, and
animal's roles in society, may or may not benefit other parts
of the world. I have read multiple articles online, and
watched multiple YouTube videos dedicated to Brazilian facts
for research purposes.

1) The first fact Id like to get into deals with Brazils laws dealing with sex
changes. In 2007, Brazilian federal judges ruled that sexual reassignment
surgery would be free to those who qualif y. Candidates for sex changes
must be at least 21, have been diagnose d as transsexual with no other
personality disorders, and had at least 2yr s of psychological
evaluations.// Founder of the Bahia Gay Gr oup, Luiz Mott, states that, for
the 0.001% of transsexuals in Brazil, sexu al reassignment surgery is a
matter of life and death, thus making this an extremely important basic
rights issue for this group of people.

Speaking of basic rights, this leads me to my next fact pertaining to people who
have lost their basic rights Those in the Brazi lian prison system. In Brazil,
Prisoners are offered some very unique way s of shortening their prison
sentences.In a prison located near Sao Paulo , Brazil, inmates can lessen
sentences by pedaling stationary bikes. Thes e arent ordinary bikes though. These
bikes have been customized to charge car b atteries, which are then used to
power street lights in the local plaza. It takes 10hrs of pedaling to charge a
battery fully, but once full, the battery holds e nough power to run 10 of the
plazas 34 street lamps. In return, inmates re ceive 1 day off of their sentence for
every 16hrs of pedaling. Theres also no max to the amount of days inmates can
cut their sentence by. Judge Jose Henrique M allman was inspired with the idea
buy an American gym whos members parti ally powered the gym by bikes.
