Critical Reflection: Leadership/Mentor Experience
NSG4061 Care of the Patient IV - Practice
Name: Latifah Patterson Date: 03/02/2023
Reflect on your experience during your leadership/mentor extrinsic day. Answer each of the following
questions in a minimum of 3-4 well-constructed sentences.
1. What actions did you perform to prepare for this mentorship experience? How effective do you
think this preparation was?
I treated this mentorship exactly like a normal clinical day. I started my morning off by
meditating and eating breakfast. I laid out my clothes and clinical materials the night before, so I
did not have to wake up rushing. My preparation was effective because, I did not feel rushed or
unprepared, and I arrived at the location 20 minutes early.
2. During the experience, what actions did you perform to support the learning of the peers you
were responsible for mentoring?
I was able to offer my assistance to each of the mentees. I primarily assisted Ede because she
had a total care resident. I assisted Ede with giving the resident a bed bath, washing his hair, and
changing his bed linen. I gave Ede some advice on how to complete the assessment during the
bed bath instead of waiting until after the bath to assess the resident.
I assisted the other students with changing their residents and with transfers.
3. Reflect back to your personal experience in quarter two. Did your past experience affect the
mentoring your provided during this extrinsic day?
Although the nursing home was one of my least favorite clinical experiences, it is good practice
to succeed in future clinicals. When I was in quarter two, I felt incompetent with completing
assessments, now I can go in patient’s room and do one in less than 15 minutes. Looking back
on my journey as a nursing student, I am proud of my accomplishments and how far I’ve come,
especially on days when it didn’t seem possible.
4. Were there any significant occurrences throughout the day that stood out to you? Please
explain.
I noticed that most of the mentees were not benefiting from clinical at the nursing home. A lot
of them complained about wanting to do more skills that are not offered at the nursing home.

Most of the mentees are currently working as techs or CNAs so a lot of the work that is done in the nursing home is a task at their current job. As a former medical assistant, I agree with the mentees, because I wanted to do more advanced skills when I was in quarter two as well.

  1. After completing this experience, would you be more open to additional mentorship opportunities (as the mentor or mentee)? Why or Why not? I would love an additional opportunity as a mentor or mentee. I enjoyed giving advice and sharing my experience as a student nurse in quarter six. Unfortunately, I did not have a mentor during my clinical rotation in quarter two, so I am willing to help be the change for the upcoming cohorts.
