Jessica-Lea Smith NUR 209 Final Paper Excelsior University December 2024
In theexperience is eld of nursing, especially in maternal and newborn care, hands-on
invaluable. This paper re ects on my recent practice experience focusing on maternal/newborn, postpartum, and pregnant patient care.
- My Experience I went to OB in the hospital i currently work for and did my “experience” on October 10, 2023, from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, located at 240 Meeting House Lane, Southampton, NY 11968. The person I shadowed was Alissa LoBiano, an NP who will soon also graduate with her midwifery degree. Alissa has over 5 years of experience in obstetrics and has completed specialized training in high-risk pregnancies and maternal-fetal - Learning about this eld medicine.
This experience allowed me to gain insight into the diverse patient population within the maternal and newborn care setting. I encountered pregnant patients from various backgrounds, each presenting unique challenges and concerns. The Hospital addressed a range of issues, from routine births to more complex ones such as gestational diabetes and hypertension, makinmom a higher risk which makes baby higher risk for birth. I learned that factors such as socioeconomic status, education, and cultural background signi cantly in uenced patient experiences and attitudes toward pregnancy and childbirth.
Participating in this experience greatly enhanced my understanding of the common disorders and problems faced by this patient population. Observing the provider's approach to assessing and managing conditions such as preeclampsia and postpartum depression was enlightening. I learned how crucial it is to monitor maternal and fetal health closely and the importance of early intervention. Additionally, I gained knowledge about the psychological aspects of pregnancy, including the emotional support needed for new mothers, which is often overlooked.
- Initial Feelings and Re ection Post-Experience
In conclusion, my recent maternal/newborn, postpartum, and pregnant patient practice experience has signi cantly impacted my nursing education and practice. The insights gained regarding the patient population's unique needs and challenges will enhance my ability to provide comprehensive and compassionate care. As I continue my journey towards becoming a registered nurse, I am committed to applying these learnings in my future practice. References: RN maternal newborn nursing (12th Ed.).(2023).
