It consists of the dried roots and stem bases of Withania somnifera (Linn.) Dunal. It should contain not less than 0.02% of total withanolide A and withaferin A on dried basis. Family – Solanaceae
The main constituents of Ashwagandha are : Alkaloids and steroidal lactones 1) Alkaloids: Major – Withanine Others-somniferine, somnine, choline, cuscohygrine, anahydrine, anaferine, tropine, pseudotropine, withananine, somniferinine, 3-α-gloyloxytropane, Isopelletierine. Two acyl steryl glucosides i.e Sitoindoside VII & Sitoindoside VIII have been isolated from the roots.

2) Steroidal lactones / Withanolides The leaves contain steroidal lactones. They have C28 steroidal nucleus with C9 side chain, having six-membered lactone rings. Withaferin and withaferin A (obtained from W. somnifera chemotype I) Withaferin E to M (Obtained from chemotype III)
and pain in the joints and especially in case of morning joint stiffness by preventing bone degeneration
5. For diabetes: Its very good remedy for the person who is suffering from Type 2 diabetes. It may also be effective in increasing the insulin sensitivity as well as lower the complications linked with diabetes. 6. Antioxidant property: Ashwagandha is very rich in antioxidants. Other health benefits: For enhancing the blood circulation. Aphrodisiac properties. Effective in preventing seizures. Good in lowering the ocular disease.
The leaf extracts shows activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Ranikhet virus.
