In India, it is cultivated in
- Rajasthan
- Gujrat
- Maharashtra
- Karnatka
It is also found in North America and some Asian countries
Cultivation
Guggul is also considered as a drought area salinity resistant plant. Guggul grows well with
mean annual rainfall of 225-500 mm and temperature rangeing from 20-35 deg C. It prefers
loams to sandy loam soils with pH ranging between 7.5 to. 9.0. It prefers to grow well in coarse
textured, well drained and calcarious soils.
Sowing Time
By Seed : September to December
By Cuttings: Cuttings are planted in June at a depth of 15 cm for raising them in nursery.

In India, it is cultivated in

  • Rajasthan
  • Gujrat
  • Maharashtra

  1. After achieving the physiological maturity (8-10 years) of plant the gum resin is tapped during mid December and February because the flow of gum is more during winter and summer.
  2. Plant attaining 7.5 cm diameter is suitable for tapping the gum resin.
  3. It is done by giving an incision 10 cm long and usually 1.5 cm deep circular incisions are made on the main branches and stems at uniform distance of 30 cm and at an angle of 60°manually.
  4. Incision should not be deeper than bark.
  5. It is done by sharp knife.
  6. The knife should be dipped in an activator like Guggal gum pest.
  7. 2-4 incisions given per plant.
  8. The yellowish white fragrant latex oozes out through the incision and slowly solidifies into vermicular pieces often forming big lump.

a) Drug Name : Guggulu b) Parts used with photo : Oleogum Resin Figure No: 2 - Guggulu Plant with Oleogum Resin C) Procedure: Shuddha Guggulu - Guggulu should be cut in to small pieces, bundle in a cloth and immerse in Dola yantra containing any one of the liquid as gomutra, godugdha, triphala kasaya, vasa kasaya/svarasa, nirgundi svaras with haridra churna. Boil till the whole amount of guggulu passes in to liquid. Filter and heat the mixture till semisolid mass, dry further in sunlight. D) Therapeutic Uses-

  1. Sthaulaya (Obesity) - In obesity, use of Guggulu with Brahat Panchmula, Shilajatu, Rasanjana and Agnimantha is beneficial to reduce fat. Guggul helps to clear excess kapha, scrapes fat and improves meda dhatu agni (the metabolic principle within adipose tissue). Guggul has a remarkable ability to support balanced cholesterol levels and purify blood.
  2. Shotha (Oedema) = One should use Guggulu with Gomutra or decoction of punanava or Haritaki or Gomutra or Shunthi mixed with jaggery.
  3. Udararoga (Disease of Abdomen) - One should use Guggulu as Shilajatu is used.use of Guggulu with milk is beneficial in Udar rog.
  4. Vatavyadhi - Use of all Rasayanas particularly of Shilajatu and Guggulu with milk is beneficial. Guggulu is the best remedy for Vata covered by Medas.
  5. Gridhasi (Sciatica ): Rasna leaves 40 gm and Guggulu - 200 gm are pounded with ghee and made into pills. It alleviates sciatica.
  6. Amavata (Rheumatoid arthritis) - One should use regularly Haritaki, Guggulu, and Shilajatu with go-mutra.
  7. Krostushirsha (arthritis of knee joint): In Krostushirsha, Guggulu or Guduchi with Triphala decoction; or castor oil or Vriddhadaruka with milk should be taken.
  8. Vatarakta (Gout) - regular use of Shilajatu, Guggulu and honey is beneficial.

Figure No: 3 - Commiphora Mukul : Oleogum Resine c) Procedure- Drugs of Indian origin are traditionally used in crude extract for reducing cholesterol levels; their use in potentized form is not fully explored in Homoeopathy. These drugs in mother tincture along with constitutional treatment can be utilized. They are also mentioned in homoeopathic Materia Medica, but their properties after potentiating do not fully reflect the indications which they show in crude form. d) Therapeutics- Hypolipidemic lowers cholesterol, antioxidant, antiseptic, antifungal, expectorant, thyroid gland stimulant. It is extremely useful for maintaining cholesterol level within normal range and helpful in to lower cholesterol, It supports the function of the thyroid gland.
