Im one of those people who always has their phone on them and Ill be honest, Id be very tempted right now if my mobile phone were to buzz, to be inclined to check what notification was awaiting me. TERM 2
DEFINITION 2 But for the benefit of my performance in this oral, I chose to leave it in my locker. And Im sure if your own mobile phones were to buzz too right now, there would be a little piece of you throughout the rest of my speech, very curious to check what notification you also have. TERM 3
DEFINITION 3 That leads me to my first argument, about how mobile phones in the classroom should be banned. They add to our lack of focus. The definition of focus in the Oxford Dictionary states that; focus is the centre of interest or activity. TERM 4
DEFINITION 4 I myself, along with Im sure a lot of my fellow peers are more than happy to admit that there has been a focus on our mobile phones during class, when our focus should have been on our teacher. TERM 5
DEFINITION 5 By forbidding mobile phones within the classroom, fortunately for teachers, students will be left with nothing to do but focus on what is being taught and give teachers the undivided attention they deserve, and removing mobile phones from within the classroom, it will enable the maximization of effective use of class time.
McKinnon Secondary College, who have already enforced the banning of mobile phones not only within the classroom, but also restricts their students from reaching for their mobile phones during lunch and recess has had an article published on their course of action. TERM 7
DEFINITION 7 Principal Pitsa Binnion openly admitted that there was laughter [and] people were actually interacting and socialising, which people from older generations think we are incapable of, with good reason. Binnion acknowledged the fact that students werent making use of every lesson as effectively because they were constantly distracted. TERM 8
DEFINITION 8 An unidentifiable source, conducted a survey whose results found that 75 percent of K-12 teachers say students ability to focus on educational tasks has decreased and the number of students who are negatively distracted by digital technologies in the classroom is growing. TERM 9
DEFINITION 9 So maybe mobile phones are not the only technological device distracting students, but it certainly seems like they are the easiest to remove. There is an evident positive coloration between the use of mobile phones in class and the lack of attention from students within the classroom. TERM 10
DEFINITION 10 Which takes me back to my opening statement, lets pretend at the beginning of my oral your phone did buzz, and for all we know might have been an emergency. The reason why you didnt pick it up was because it would firstly, be disrespectful to myself, your presenter and secondly it would not be appropriate to use a during a formal assessment.
Baffling. The fact that the death of a 14-year-old girl, wasnt enough to ban the use of mobile phones within the classroom but only spark debate in why its a problem is outrageous. TERM 17
DEFINITION 17 When is enough going to be enough? How many deaths and cases of cyberbullying do we need to see happen to realise that we need to ban phones within the classroom? TERM 18
DEFINITION 18 And yes, I can acknowledge the counter argument to my speech being that mobile phones arent the only devices that should be banned to prohibit bullying within the classroom, but, isnt it at least a start? TERM 19
DEFINITION 19 We live in a world, where we rely on technology so unfortunately it would be very unrealistic to remove every single device. But devices like mobile phones that dont contribute to students learning can easily be removed. TERM 20
DEFINITION 20 Students apparently check their phones in the classroom an average of more than 11 times a day, and guilty as proven and anyone telling you otherwise is either a liar or doesnt own a mobile phone. Students also apparently spend up to 20% of their in-class time texting, emailing and checking social media, but yet were surprised this topic is being debated?
Correct me if I am wrong, but Im sure you as teachers hate nothing more than seeing a student on their phone during class, not only are they wasting your time but having to tell them off, probably more than once a lesson is just annoying. TERM 22
DEFINITION 22 Its not only a distraction to yourselves who are trying to teach, but also the other students who want to learn. TERM 23
DEFINITION 23 So how come, the decrease of effective class time, cyber- bullying, the death of a 14-year-old girl and the possible improvement of academic results is still not be enough for phones to be banned within the classroom, you ask?I just dont know
