TERM 1
Introduction
DEFINITION 1
Good morning/good afternoon class an d Ms OKeefe, today I will be
discussing how pill testing kits should be made available at
festivals and the importance of why. With the availability of pill
testing kits consumers are able to ide ntify the substances in which
they are taking and the need for this information is absolute
because it gives an informed in site o f what these illicit drugs
contain.
TERM 2
Argument 1
DEFINITION 2
People often say that they will only tr y it once and they wont
become addicted, but what they don t realise is what they are
putting in their bodies. Illicit drugs have many effects on the
person consuming them and those a round them. Drugs are
chemicals. Because of their chemic al structures, these drugs can
affect the body in many different wa ys. In fact, some drugs can
even change a persons body and bra in in ways that last long after
the person has stopped taking drugs, maybe even permanently.
TERM 3
Argument 2
DEFINITION 3
Depending on the drug, it can enter the human body in a
number of ways, these including injection, inhalation and
even ingestion. The method of how it enters the body
impacts on how the drug affects the person. For example,
when someone ingests a pill it requires the drug to pass
through the digestive system, delaying the effects.
TERM 4
Argument 3
DEFINITION 4
Most abused drugs directly or indirect ly target the brains reward
system by flooding the circuit with do pamine. Dopamine is a
neurotransmitter present in regions of the brain that regulate
movement, emotion, cognition and m otivation. When drugs enter
the brain, they can actually change how the brain performs its
tasks. These changes are what lead to compulsive drug use, the
hallmark of addiction.
TERM 5
Argument 4
DEFINITION 5
With the concern of this, there has been a rise in deaths, illnesses
and disabilities that stem from substan ce abuse than from any
other preventable health conditions. Today, one in four deaths is
attributable to illicit drug use. People w ho live with substance
dependence have a higher risk of all bad outcomes including
unintentional injuries, accidents, and risk of domestic violence,
medical problems and even death.

TERM 1

Introduction

DEFINITION 1 Good morning/good afternoon class and Ms OKeefe, today I will be discussing how pill testing kits should be made available at festivals and the importance of why. With the availability of pill testing kits consumers are able to identify the substances in which they are taking and the need for this information is absolute because it gives an informed in site of what these illicit drugs contain. TERM 2

Argument 1

DEFINITION 2 People often say that they will only try it once and they wont become addicted, but what they dont realise is what they are putting in their bodies. Illicit drugs have many effects on the person consuming them and those around them. Drugs are chemicals. Because of their chemical structures, these drugs can affect the body in many different ways. In fact, some drugs can even change a persons body and brain in ways that last long after the person has stopped taking drugs, maybe even permanently. TERM 3

TERM 4

Argument 3

DEFINITION 4 Most abused drugs directly or indirectly target the brains reward system by flooding the circuit with dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter present in regions of the brain that regulate movement, emotion, cognition and motivation. When drugs enter the brain, they can actually change how the brain performs its tasks. These changes are what lead to compulsive drug use, the hallmark of addiction. TERM 5

Argument 4

DEFINITION 5 With the concern of this, there has been a rise in deaths, illnesses and disabilities that stem from substance abuse than from any other preventable health conditions. Today, one in four deaths is attributable to illicit drug use. People who live with substance dependence have a higher risk of all bad outcomes including unintentional injuries, accidents, and risk of domestic violence, medical problems and even death.

TERM 6

Argument 5

DEFINITION 6 Research shows that, when making a decision, teens think about both the risks and rewards of their actions, unlike adults, teens are more likely to ignore the risk in favour of the reward. The desire to impress friends may override the fear of taking these risks. This could also apply to deciding whether to try drugs or alcohol. Parents who want to dispel the myth that drugs and alcohol are an adolescent rite of passage can simply cite the facts. TERM 7

Argument 6

DEFINITION 7 In 2010, 34% of students had ever used drugs and only 27% had done so within the past year. If pill-testing kits were made available at venues that are known of having people consuming pills then it could inform users about the content of illicit drugs. Young people's overall views about drugs could change because the information that they are given can help them make an informed choice. Research shows that the ingredients of tested pills started to correspond to the expected components over time. TERM 8

Argument 7

DEFINITION 8 This suggests pill testing might be able to change the black market in positive ways. Pill testing means we can capture long- term data about the actual substances that are present in the drug scene and it creates the potential for early warning system beyond immediate users. This is becoming all the more important as new psychoactive substances that may be used by adulterants are appearing more frequently TERM 9

Argument 8

DEFINITION 9 Not long ago at a music festival Georgina Bartter a 19-year-old girl passed of a suspected overdose on ecstasy. With the use of a pill testing kit she may have been able to prevent the event that occurred, but this can only be done if the kits are easily accessible. It's a known fact that 70% of pills are taken at clubs, festivals and parties. Research also shows that young people are highly supportive of pill testing and that more than 82% of the 2,300 young Australians aged between 16 and 25 years old surveyed for the Australian nation council on drug in 2013 TERM 10

End

DEFINITION 10 In many different European countries such as the Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium and Germany you can receive a pill testing kit. Research from Austria shows 50% of those who had their drugs tested and said the results affected their consumption choices. Visits to pill testing booths create an important opportunity for providing support and information about the testing itself
