STAGE WRITE: DEAR EVAN HANSEN CHALLENGE
Document the Tony performance of Ben Platt and the cast of DEAR EVAN HANSEN by capturing the blocking,
spacing, pathways that go into that performance, and learn how Stage Write is used on Broadway.
Part 1: Watch video and track the blocking of EVAN as he moves through the space.
Part 2: Make notes in the script about blocking and spacing.
Part 3: Document the group movement and staging with complex patterns.
PART 1: 1st Half: BLOCKING CHALLENGE
Watch the 2017 Tony performance of Ben Platt and the company of DEAR EVAN HANSEN. Use the template
provided to document each move. Only go up until the moment ZOE joins him on stage.
Create a new chart for each move he makes on the stage. Only go up until ZOE joins him.
TONY PERFORMANCE: Here’s the VIDEO clip.
ENTER BLOCKING ON STAGE WRITE CHARTS:
Make a new chart for each new position you move to in the space.
ENTER CUE LINE ON CHART
Write the cue line in the bottom left corner so the audience will know what line is being spoken in this position.
ADVANCED CHALLENGE:
For those who are very ambitious, create icons and set from scratch.
PART 2: ANNOTATE THE SCRIPT
ENTER BLOCKING NOTES: 1st Half only
Make notes in the script about staging, including, which direction is he facing. When is he walking downstage?
Make sure the anchor for the action shows on the exact word that move begins. Make it really detailed as if it was
you who had to remember each move. Only go up until ZOE joins him on the stage.
LINK YOUR SCRIPT WITH CHARTS:
Using the SCRIPT AND CHART VIEW, link sections of the script to your charts so you can flip back and forth
between charts and script.
PART 3: DOCUMENT THE 2nd HALF WITH THE GROUP:
Now, beginning at the moment ZOE joins EVAN, document each person’s pathway and position to create a
complete chart and script for the entire number. The goal is to create a document so clear that if no one had a
video of the performance they could read your script and charts and know where to go.
MAKE NOTES ON SCRIPT and CHART and link your charts with the script. Use the attached KEY to identify the
characters from the video.

The goal is to create a document so clear that if no one had a video of the performance they could read your script and charts and know where to go. MAKE NOTES ON SCRIPT and CHART and link your charts with the script. Use the attached KEY to identify the characters from the video.

When you are finished you can compare it with the actual charts and this side by side VIDEO. FINISHED CHARTS: SIDE BY SIDE VIDEO Don’t cheat by watching this until after. This shows the charts side by side with the live shot.

EDUCATOR: SETTING UP: For this exercise you will want to send each student a copy of the production which has the set and dimensions already in place. Open “DEH Challenge” Production that you received. If you don’t have it let us know and we’ll send it to you. COPY PRODUCTION: You are going to make a copy of this production and save it with each student’s name and send it to them. Go to SETTINGS > COPY PRODUCTION. Name the production “DEH: Jeff Whiting” (or name of students) > COPY. Don’t change the dimensions. Now, Transfer the ownership to the student but keep yourself as a collaborator so you can see the work, as shown below: Now the students can do the exercise from the template. If they are very ambitious, they COULD also create their space from scratch if they like, but this is the easiest way for them to capture the staging and to learn how the app is used on over 80 Broadway shows.
