An introduction to the immune system, focusing on the two major defense systems: innate and adaptive. The innate immune system is discussed in terms of its barriers, such as the skin, and its physical and biochemical components, including commensal microbes and the inflammatory response. The adaptive immune system is broken down into its two components: humoral and cell-mediated. The roles and functions of various immunoglobulins (lgm, lgd, lge, lgg, and lga) in the immune response, as well as their respective roles in hypersensitivity reactions, fetal and neonatal immunity, and mucosal immunity.
