Cervix Ripening

  • Dinoprostone (Cervidil) o To end pregnancy/ Cervical ripening o Contra- oxytocin drugs, hx cesarean sec<on or uterine surgery, vaginal bleeding

  • Morphine (Nubain) o IM, IV (maximum dose 20mg) o Careful w/ respiratory depression

Meds for Babies

  • Erythromycin- prevent eye infec<on

o Ointment eye aSer birth to prevent pink eye o An<bio<cs for Syphilis

  • Vitamin K (Aqua MEPHYTON) o Preven<on of bleeding in newborns o Babies don’t have clobng factors when they are born o Administer IM within 1st^ hr./ aSer birth o Promotes forma<on of clobng factors o Decrease risk of hemorrhage o IM vastus lateralis- risk for hematoma; Don’t administer IV o Assess injec<on site, edema, irrita<on
  • Hepa<<s B vaccine o Immuniza<on/ protec<on against virus o Given to the baby when the mother is + for Hepa<<s B o Prevent newborn infect. o Parents needs to sign consent ac administra<on o Get vaccine aSer 12 hrs of birth o IM vatus-lateralis

Meds for mom

  • Rubella vaccine o Pregnant shouldn’t give virus vaccines bc it can harm the fetus o Given shortly aSer giving birth; preferably prior to discharge from the hospital o Sub Q administer 28 days apart
  • Methaclopramide (Reglan) o For Severe refractory (N/V) o Prevent N/V, slowing moving GI o It crosses the placenta & detected in cord blood and amnio<c fluid
  • Celestone (Betamethasone) o Speed up development in preterm o For mom (lung maturity( o Produc<on of more surfactant in fetal lungs to prevent respiratory distress o Cor<costeroids
  • Witch Hazel- an<-inflammatory o Topical apply anorectal aSer BM o Soothe skin
  • Folic Acid- prevent neural tube defect
  • Calcium Gluconate o Hypocalcemia during pregnancy & helps over dose beta blocker o Prevent low calcium
  • Rh D immune globulin o Given to mothers is baby is Rh+ o To prevent Hydrops fetalis (Hydrops fetalis is the most severe form of Rh incompa<bility and can be prevented by the administra<on of Rho (D) immunoglobulin.) o Use to prevent an<bodies from forming aSer a person w/ Rh – blood receives transfusion of Rh+ o Mothers Rh- blood and baby Rh+
  • Sodium Citrate & Citric acid
