Content

  • Definition
  • Advantages & Disadvantages of Aerosols
  • Classification of Aerosols
  • Components
  • Propellants
  • Types of aerosol systems
  • Filling of Aerosols
  • Quality control Test of aerosols
  • Reference

Advantages of Aerosols

  • The medication can be delivered directly to the affected area in a desired form
  • The hydrolysis of medicament can be prevented
  • The sterility of the product can be maintained
  • The application of medicament is easier
  • Manual contact with medicaments can be avoided

Disadvantages of Aerosols

  • Aerosols are costly preparation
  • Some of the propellants are very toxic
  • Lots of difficulties are faced in aerosol formulation when the drug is not soluble in propellant
  • The cooling effect of highly volatile propellants may cause discomfort on injured skin

Components

Following components: ▪ Containers ▪ Valve ▪ Actuator ▪ Concentrate containing the active ingredient ▪ Propellant

Container

  • In Pharmaceutical aerosols containers are made from metal (such as tin, steel, aluminum and stainless steel), glass and plastic
  • These containers can withstand high pressure

Actuator

  • Actuator is fitted on the valve stem
  • It helps in the easy opening and closing of the valve, whenever it is required
  • This is used to ensure that the product is delivered properly in the desired form

Dip tubes

  • It conveys the liquid from the bottom of the container to the dispensing valve at the top
  • The dip tubes are made from polyethylene or polypropylene

Types of aerosol systems

1. Solution system(Two-phase Systems)

2. Water based system(Emulsion Systems)

3. Suspension systems(Dispersion Systems)

4. Foam systems

Filling of Aerosols

  • Both manufacturing procedures and packaging are carried simultaneously
  • To prepare and package pharmaceutical aerosols successfully, special knowledge, skills and equipment are required
  • Includes three equipment:
    1. Pressure filling apparatus
    2. Cold filling apparatus
    3. Compressed gas filling apparatus
