Magnetic Induction

Week 5

Objectives

Measure the strength and direction of the magnetic field at different locations in a laboratory. Compare the strength of the induced magnetic field to Earth's magnetic field. The direction and magnitude of the inducting current can be adjusted. My hypothesis is that depending where you put a compass depends on where it points

Data

Q1: A wire carries a current of 10 amps. A researcher finds that the strength of the

induced magnetic field at a certain point is 0.50 G. What will the strength of the induced field be at the same point if the current is increased to 25 amps?

A1: 1.25 G

Q2: The probe shown below is sixty millimeters south of a wire. The induced field at that

location is 1.20 G in the eastern direction. The Earth's magnetic field at the location is 0.50 G in the northern direction. How strong is the total magnetic field measured by the probe?

A2: 1.30 G

Q3: Planet X has a magnetic field with strength 0.80 G in the southern direction. When a probe is placed 30 mm east of a vertical wire it measures a field of 0.60 G in the southern direction. What would a probe read if placed 10 mm east of the vertical wire?

A3: 0.20 G towards the south

Q4: Three compasses are shown next to a wire carrying a positive current (towards the

viewer). The strength of the total magnetic field at the location of the left compass is 0.30 G. The strength of the total magnetic field at the location of the right compass is 0.40 G. Which of the following best describes the strength of the total magnetic field at the location of the middle compass?

A4: Between 0.00G and 0.30 G

Q5: In the screenshot below, which compasses would change their orientation if the

magnetic field of the Earth were reversed?

A5: The outer two compasses would switch direction.
