Topic: Physiological

properties of

coagulation factors

Synthesis

  • (^) Synthesis: Most coagulation factors are synthesized in the liver, except for Factors VIII and XIII.

Activation

  • (^) Activation: Coagulation factors undergo proteolytic cleavage to become activated, often in a cascade fashion.

Regulation

  • (^) Regulation: Coagulation is tightly regulated by natural anticoagulants such as antithrombin III, protein C, and protein S to prevent excessive clot formation.

Hemostasis

  • (^) Hemostasis Role: Coagulation factors work together to form a stable blood clot at the site of injury, preventing excessive bleeding.
