b. Draw the mechanism showing the formation of the product for test tube 3. (14.5 pts)

c. The Fischer esterification reaction is reversible. List 2 ways to push the reaction to favor the ester product. (3 pts)

d. Explain why:

(i) using excess absolute (100%) ethanol) is a better choice than 95% ethanol in a Fischer esterification reaction. (3 pts)

(ii) water was added following the reaction. (2.5 Pts)

(ii) Sodium bicarbonate was added to the ester product. (2 pts)

  1. This question refers to the IR spectrum that was taken of your reaction product in your chosen test tube. Please see pages 61-67 in your lab manual for more information about IR. Explain how you used your IR spectrum to differentiate between your ester product and starting materials (IR spectrum of starting materials are provided in the module if you did not obtain your own). In your explanation, give specific functional groups (bonds) and wave numbers. If there are any unexpected peaks in your IR spectrum, offer an explanation and identify the functional groups. Submit a copy of your IR product spectrum with this assignment. (10 pts)
