Homework 2
(25 pts.) The same general directions as Homework 1 for being organized
and neat.
1. (8 pts.) Go to a grocery store and compare various meats for fat grams
per serving.
The 8 meats are: ground turkey, turkey hot dogs, chicken breasts, breaded
chicken breasts, 2 kinds of ground beef based on their fat content i.e. 80%
& 96% and any 2 kinds of lunch meat.
Look at the food labels.
Answer these questions: Were the poultry products lower in fat grams per
serving than red meats? Did the breaded product contain the most fat
grams per serving? What percentage of lunchmeats were fat? For this last
question you may either calculate this or show me % calories from DV.
For full credit, have a list of the 8 kinds of meat with their fat grams per
serving. Servings and the kinds of products that fit into each item vary so
there is some “wiggle” room but do your best to collect info, compare it and
answer the questions. (FYI 4 pts. for list, 4 pts. for questions)
2. (4 pts.) Read the overall section “Fats and Oils in Foods” in the text on
pages 172-173.
Categorize all of these fats listed below. These fats are “buried” in the text.
Do not use Figure 5-6.
Find the fats that have 100 % of calories from fat, 80 %, 75%, 60 %, 50 %,
35%, 15%, 0%. Your answers can be a list or a chart.
From pg.172: butter, cheddar cheese, eggs, ice cream, bacon, cupcakes,
bread, mayonnaise, whole milk, marbled steaks, nuts, chocolate bars,
sugar, peanut butter, bologna, cornflakes, ground round, ground chuck,
pumpkin pie, doughnuts.
This list is mixed up. Unscramble them to go from 100 % down to 0 %.
Put them into categories as to how much fat they contain, 100-0 %.
Afterwards, as a way of double checking, here is how many fats you should
have in each category:
100 % - 2 80 % - 3 75 % - 2 60 % - 2
50 % - 4 35 % - 4 15 % - 1 0 % - 2
3. (5 pts.) Rate Your Plate pg. 404 I. (#1) “How High is Your Sodium
Intake?”
For all 10 questions, write down one of the 4 possible answers.
Tell me if you have more checks in the first 2 columns or last 2 columns.

Rate Your Plate pg. 404 I. (#1) “How High is Your Sodium Intake?” For all 10 questions, write down one of the 4 possible answers. Tell me if you have more checks in the first 2 columns or last 2 columns.

For full credit, label your answer as to which set of columns you had more checks in. It is possible to come out even. Also Rate Your Plate pg. 404-405 II. (#2) “Working for Denser Bones.” Fill out the chart. It has been scanned and is an option to print off under the Content section. How do you feel about your bone density preservation? For full credit, include the 1 page sheet with your 1-2 sentence comment. Next Page

4. (8 pts.) Pretend that there is The Body Company and a vitamin has to “apply” for a job by describing what that vitamin can do for The Body Company. Pick any vitamin that interests you but you only need one. Information you would write about: functions, attributes, food sources where you find it, diseases it prevents, and other nutrients it works best with. Minimum of 5 facts = 5 of 8 pts. For full credit, be creative by using the “company” and “interview” idea. If you don’t want to use an actual interview format, you can use a cover sheet, resume format or another unique business-like format. Some students have been very creative = GREAT (3 pts.) Some have been a little creative = O.K. (2 pts.) Some have not been very creative at all = NOT SO GOOD (1 pt.)
