Phy 211: General Physics I 1
Lab 4 Preliminary Questions
1) A ball rolls off a flat level table at a constant horizontal velocity then descends to the floor.
The height of the table is 1.3 m. To measure the horizontal velocity of the ball, 2 photogates
were placed 4.5 cm apart along the balls path, just before the ball leaves the table. The time
the ball traveled between the photogates was measured to be of 0.0250 s.
a) Calculate the measured horizontal velocity of the ball.
b) Express the ball’s velocity vector,
v(t)
, in component form using symbols, while it is in the
air.
c) How much time does it take for the ball to fall to the ground? Solve for time symbolically,
you will be able to use this expression in the following step without having to explicitly get
a time value.
d) How far from the table does the ball strike the ground? Derive a general expression for the
horizontal displacement in terms of g, y and vx, then solve for a value.
e) If the same ball were travelling with an initial horizontal speed of 5 m/s when it leaves the
table, how far from the table would the ball in strike the ground?
