MUT 2246
Tests and Assignments
Fall 2005
Your work will be divided into four units. Each unit will incorporate assignments in four areas:
Prepared singing and sight singing
Melodic dictation
Harmonic dictation
Chord dictation
Sight Singing
Prepared singing and sight singing exercises will be taken from Music for Sight Singing by
Benjamin, Horvit, & Nelson. Supplemental material for sight singing can be found in the CAI
lab.
Melodic/Harmonic Dictation
Melodic and harmonic dictation assignments will primarily be taken from A New Approach to
Ear Training by Kraft. An exception is interval/chord identification exercises, which will utilize
software in the CAI lab. Each unit will include two lessons from the Kraft text; follow
instructions in the text to determine whether you should also work on the double-lettered lessons.
You should also work on the “short drills” as the text directs. Also, keep in mind that the
CASPAR CD gives supplemental drill that is sequenced precisely with the main CDs for this
text. Because of the greater flexibility of CASPAR, I would recommend that you attempt the
CASPAR lessons before attempting the lessons in the four-CD set.
Rhythmic Reading
No separate rhythmic dictation or rhythmic reading assignments will be made this semester;
Kraft has incorporated progressively sequenced rhythmic dictation within his melodic dictation
exercises. You are encouraged, however, to explore the software in the CAI lab that specifically
drills rhythmic dictation, as needed.
The homework portion of your grade will be based on your weekly work in each of the four
areas listed above. Document your work as follows.
Melodic/Harmonic dictation—Turn in printouts of your progress form the CASPAR CD from
each practice session. You should also turn in score sheets from each single and/or double-
lettered lesson from the four-CD set.
Prepared singing and sight singing—Turn in a weekly summary of each exercise practiced and
time spent practicing on this essential skill. You may use loose-leaf paper for these reports.
All reports are due the day of the corresponding unit quiz
