Who Gets Postpartum Depression?

● Postpartum depression can affect any woman but some may be more at risk for developing it.

● Women who have had any kind of depression in the past or who have a family history of depression are more likely to get postpartum depression.

● Factors that can increase this:

● Serious stress during the pregnancy ● medical problems during the pregnancy or after birth ● lack of support at home.

Symptoms

● Your moods change suddenly and without warning. ● You have difficulty remembering things. ● You can’t concentrate or make simple decisions ● You feel disconnected from your baby and wonder why you’re not filled with joy like you thought you’d be. ● You feel worthless and guilty about your feelings. ● You feel like you can’t open up to anyone because they’ll think you’re a bad mother or take your baby, so you withdraw.

Physical Factors

Some other physical factors may include:

● low thyroid hormone levels

● sleep deprivation

● inadequate diet

● underlying medical conditions

● drug and alcohol misuse

Emotional factors

Emotional stressors may include:

● recent divorce or death of a loved one

● you or your child having serious health problems

● social isolation

● financial burdens

● lack of support

Prevention

● Absolute prevention isn’t really possible. ● Firstly, be proactive. During pregnancy, tell your doctor if:

  • you’ve had a previous episode of postpartum depression
  • you’ve ever had major depression or another mood disorder
  • you currently have symptoms of depression

● Enhancing social support from family members.

How to deal with Postpartum Depression

● Communicate : It might be helpful to talk things with someone you trust. You may find that you’re not alone and that others are willing to listen. ● Use your energy to take care of basic needs for you and your baby. If at all possible, enlist the help of family and friends. ● Rest and Relax: Both your body and your spirit need a good night sleep. Meditation and massage may help ease tension and help you fall asleep.

Conclusion

● Hormonal factors may be important in development of postpartum depression in a women.

● Hence external factors such as lack of weight gain in the child,illness of the child,poor communication with husband ans others may be very important in development of this.

● This form of depression is largely avoidable and may lead to deleterious effect growth and development of the child
