American’s Health Beliefs and Practices. Professor Karen Noel NURS 203 November 07, 2020
Haeli Stadlman, a 28 years old White lady with a medical history of spasms and chronic back pain in the lumbar spine has her family originated from Austrian-Hungarian background, and she believes factors like immobility, poverty, unstable mental health, and insurance companies make illness and disease worse. My client explained to me that she realized exercise is a very important need for our health improvement. She used to do exercises and move her body every day even when she feels there is no energy in her. She has learned that immobility harms her health especially when she had chronic back pain. She added that insurance is not helping people when they are too expensive and people would prefer to buy over the counter medication without consulting a primary physician. People risk their health due to poverty and the outcomes are always worsening. Besides, Haeli Stadlman said her mental health is very important to her and she realized that when she was a victim of depression in 2013. She did manage the depression with antidepressant RX’s. She recognized that lack of her self-awareness is contributing to her health issues and since her last diagnosis of depression, she has been going for her medical routine check-up, exercising, and watching exciting movies that would cheer her up. My client stated that sleeping, a good diet, coping skills, and self-care are the beliefs of her family to promote their healths. She is a night worker and it gives her the reason for not sleeping well. She is trying her best to gain 6-9 hours of sleep per day but admit that sometimes it is less. In terms of diet, she and her family believe that eating meals in a controlled proportion, lower amount of calories and fat, and eating varied amounts of fruits and vegetables are practices that promote healths. She is a craft lover, and she uses facebook crafts groups to show people about her handworks. Crafting has helped her to develop her ability to cope and promote her mental health. The family never joke about any opportunity to get going on vacation because Americans don’t take enough time off work to enjoy themselves. Haeli Stadlman stated that she is a spiritual person and was raised Irish Catholic. But, does not believe in their teachings or practices anymore. She stated that she will attend Church services out of respect for her grandparents/family, but cannot support the Catholic faith due to the physical and sexual abuse that many children have endured from Catholic priests/people in authority positions. My client is spiritual and thinks that the universe has negative and positive
nonjudgmental, empathetic, supportive, and hardworking. As long as the staff is trying their best to offer high-quality care, that is what matters to her.
