  1. a) Batch production has the disadvantage of high work-in-progress levels. State two other disadvantages associated with batch production. (4 marks) b) Discuss how the following operations are performed in a Lean organisation as opposed to in a traditional western manufacturing organisation. i. Raw material procurement ii. Quality Management iii. Employee recruitment and retention (9 marks) c) Organisations have to consider and predict how the demand for their product will change over time. Some organisations produce finish goods and some a service. Discuss the effect that the demand profile has on these two different types of company and the options that they have to accommodate the changes in demand. (10 marks) d) Describe the five stages of the product development and in particular discuss tools/techniques that can be used to make sure you are designing a product that the customer wants. (10 marks)
  2. a) What is design quality? (3 marks) b) The reliability of a product depends in great part on how well reliability is planned into the product in the early design stages. Discuss the different factors that contribute to the reliability of a products and give examples of design methods that can be employed. (15 marks) c) Calculate the mean time before failure (MTBF) of component 1 given the following information. (15 marks)

a). Rsystem = 0.9 at 300 hours b). R 1 is approximated by the exponential distribution. c). R 2 is approximated by the normal distribution with a mean of 900 and a standard deviation of 300.
