Ch.

  • CJ Marcum: (Narrates) ‐ CJ ‐ Cincinnatus Jefferson Dillon Lloyd – brother of Clabe Lloyd – Vernie‐wife; children‐ Rondal – Talcott – Kerwin Henry & Missouri (Papaw & Mamaw) Marcum Ermel Justice – Annadel(wife); children‐ Isom & Pricie Introduced to Marcum’s Branch: Papaw Marcum won’t sign over land. Everyone who signs over land loses his land. Railroad leased mineral rights to the coal companies. Rondal is born in 1890. Once Henry Marcum is killed, CJ & Mamaw go to live with Ermel Justice, Henry’s cousin. Ermel has a mill, a forge, a store, and a farm on Blackberry Creek where there is fortunately no coal. Dillon vows to go back into the mountains to live. Clabe, Vernie & Rondal move to her home place on Island Creek, then move back after that land is lost to a coal company. CJ & Ermel go to Justice by train. As they go by Marcum’s Branch, there is now a tipple and stone buildings & lots of mud. Marcum’s Branch has been renamed Winco by the coal company. Clabe will work the mines and at least settle on the homeplace. Ch.2 – Rondal Lloyd narrates Rondal speaks of childhood memories: his father’s weekly bath; his appearance; description of company store; no trespassing sign; gate denying access to family cemetery. Rondal visits Mrs. Radcliffe’s apartment, brings cookies home for brothers. Description of coal camp houses; visiting CJ on Sundays in Annadel; Coal company guards tell him to come only once a month. Talcott is a better shot; Rondal does not like to kill, but does kill to bring food home to his mother. Clabe takes Rondal into the mine to help load coal; Talcott has been beaten by the slate boss & Vernie cries. Joe Kracj is killed in a slate fall. CJ offers to take Rondal to work in his new store so Clabe takes Talcott into the mines. Ch.3 – Carrie Bishop: Describes the Bishop home place in Kentucky; describes herself and her family. Aunt Jane lives on Scary Creek where it flows into Grapevine. Orlando Bishop – father is cold with high expectations. Ben Honaker (school teacher) – marries Flora sister of – Carrie, sister of – Miles, father Orlando, mother, Tildy May, deceased.

Orlando picks on Miles who doesn’t like to hunt, but he teaches Carrie. Miles at 17 goes to Berea. Describes Aunt Becka who hates men and frightens Flora after her engagement to Ben. Albion Freeman is brought to them with pneumonia and stays with the Bishops until Fall. Ch.4 – Rosa Angelelli: Rosa leaves Italy, marries Mario, wants to leave when the “butterflies return”. Ch.5 – C.J. Marcum: He and Doc Booker go to coal camp to help sick folks there. He is a Socialist, starts The Annadel Free Press with printing press from Ermel. C.J. – Violet – 2 daughters Ch.6 – Carrie Bishop: Daddy sells trees to Miles who had graduated from Berea & becomes a mine superintendent; Carrie wants to go to Nursing school. Orlando dies ferrying logs to Catlettsburg, KY. The family is bereft. Miles is guilty. Flora has her baby three months prematurely; it dies & is buried beside Flora & Carrie’s mother

  • Tildy May Bishop. Ch.7 – Rosa Angelelli: Rosa talks about Mario working outside the mine because he plays baseball. Her children have become miners. Mr. Davidson collects local butterflies & she cleans their cases. Ch.8 – Rondal Lloyd: Rondal & C.J. argue. Rondal will not go to Huntington to medical school but will assist in unionizing the coal fields. The Blackberry Pickers are formed. Rondal moves home, goes into the Winco mines. Lytton Davidson hires two dozen Baldwin‐Felco agents to prevent union activities and Rondal invites the union to Winco. Davidson develops a model coal camp to counter the union. Gun thugs beat up Rondal and kills Johnson, the union organizer, by throwing him in a furnace. Rondal becomes Lloyd Justice and flees to Kentucky.

Ch.13 – Carrie Bishop: Albion begins work at the mine at Felco. Carrie begins work for Doc Booker @ $2/day. Davidson #6 has a gas explosion. Clabe & Kerwin are killed. Ch.14 – Rosa Angelelli: Rosa’s boys are also killed. She begins to unravel mentally. Ch.15 – Rondal Lloyd: Rondal returns to unionize. Isom begins dating Gladys, C.J.’s daughter. The importance of the fullness of time philosophy is realized. Guards kill a union miner’s family at Winco. Rondal calls a strike. Pond Creek, #5 Davidson, Felco, Winco, Carbon and Jenkinjones. The Baldwin‐Felts guards stop at Annadel after evicting miners from Jenkinjones. A gun fight ensues. The Felts brothers are killed; C.J. is killed; Antoine is shot, the miners are dead as are guards. Rondal sees Dillon at C.J.’ s funeral: Rondal thinks that Dillon has already died because he withdrew from the world. Ch. 16 – Rosa Angelelli: Rosa interlude – Rosa has become insane. Ch.17 – Carrie Bishop: Rondal tells Carrie that they have burned down Lytton Davidson’s house. Also that he pulled Rosa from the burning house. (Isom has told Rondal that Mario has left, that Rosa’s 4 sons were killed in the # mine explosion and that Mr. Davidson has moved her into his house). The strike is on and miners wear red bandanas. Baldwin‐Felts agents arrive with strikebreakers. Miners occupy tent camps and begin shooting at the scabs as they go to work. A contract is placed on Rondal and he leaves. The Governor declares martial law and state policemen and Baldwin agents attack the camp, arresting and beating men & women. The Annadel hotel houses the state police & guards. Ermel is thrown out and Talcott’s house is burned. Isom and Albion are arrested for the May Baldwin‐Felts murders and 400 miners are arrested. Isom and Albion are given bail thanks to Ermel, and Doc. Booker is evicted by state police. The miners/families try to keep from freezing and Episcopalians & Presbyterians come to the camp to sing carols and leave a turkey per tent and oranges for the children. The camp women (about 1,000) march on the company store, taking food and guns. Guards bring a train to the camp, kill Sam, and machine gun the camp. Carrie is shot and gets pneumonia. The trial is ready to begin. Isom and Albion are killed as they walk up the courthouse steps.

PART‐FOUR

Ch.18 – Carrie Bishop: Carrie moves back to the Aunt Jane place. Ch.19 – Rondal Lloyd: Rondal and Carrie bicker. Ch.20 – Carrie Bishop: The march on Logan begins. Ch.21 – Rondal Lloyd: The march proceeds Ch.22 – Carrie Bishop: Carrie begins working with Doc Booker, getting ready for wounded. She tells Doc she is pregnant with Rondal’s baby. Ch.23 – Rondal Lloyd: The battle of Blair Mountain. Rondal is seriously wounded. Ch.24 – Carrie Bishop: Rondal’s spinal cord is broken. The army is coming so Carrie begins to take Rondal to her home place. She secures rides with reporters and gets Miles to take them out of Logan on Lytton Davidson’s train. Denbigh finds out about Rondal & plans to write the coal owners since Miles decides to help Carrie and Rondal.
