STORAGE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY

INTRODUCTION

  • Energy storage is the capture of energy produced at one time for use at a later time.
  • It involves converting energy from forms that are difficult to store to more conveniently or economically storable forms.

ENERGY STORAGE TECHNOLOGIES- categories

  • POWER QUALITY- Main purpose is frequency and voltage regulation. Examples: Flywheel, Ultra capacitors, SMES, batteries.
  • BRIDGING POWER- Main purpose is to act as contingency reserves and ramping of load. Examples- High energy density batteries.
  • ENERGY MANAGEMENT-Main purpose is load following, capacity supply, reduction of transmission and distribution losses. Example- CAES, pumped hydro storage.

THERMAL STORAGE

  • Thermal stores are highly insulated tanks that can store heat as hot water for many hours.
  • Concentrating solar plants can capture heat from the sun and store the energy in water, molten salts, or other fluids. This is later used to generate electricity, even after sunset.
  • Thermal stores are commonly used with a number of renewable systems: - Biomass or wood-fuelled heating systems - Solar water heating - Heat pumps - Solar PV and wind or hydro turbines.

HEAT BATTERIES

  • It is a new technology for storing either spare heat or electricity generated by renewable energy systems.
  • They work on the principle that heat is stored when a material changes phase from a liquid to a solid.

CAES-COMPRESSED AIR ENERGY STORAGE

  • It also works as a generation storage technology by using^ the elastic potential energy of compressed air to improve the efficiencies of conventional gas turbines.
  • CAES systems compress air using electricity during off-peak times, and then store in underground caverns.
  • The three options that are available for underground storage are- salt domes, cavities in solid rock formations and aquifers

OTHER STORAGE FORMS

  • Researchers are undertaking several researches on photochemical storage of energy. Energy storage by phytochemical means is essential for green plants.
  • Researchers are also taking several initiatives towards superconducting storage.
  • Hydrogen can be used as a zero-carbon fuel for generation. Excess electricity produced can be used to create hydrogen, which can be stored and used later.
