Reproductive System and Muscle Types Lab Report
Lab observations:
Lab partner name _____________.
Note lab partners may use the same photos taken in the lab, but the labels should be done
individually. The lab activities are done by groups, but this lab report is an individual
assignment.
1. (5% of the lab report grade) Take a photo of the testis slide (under 10x), insert the photo
below, and use lines with arrows ( ) to label a seminiferous tubule, Sertoli cells, and Leydig
cells.
2. (5%) Take a photo of the sperm smear slide (under 40x), insert the photo below, and use lines
with arrows to label the head, midpiece, and the tail of a sperm. Explain functions of these 3
structures.
3. (6%) Using the Graafian Follicles slide, find a Graafian follicle and take a photo under 4x.
Insert the photo(s) below, and use lines with arrows to label granulosa cells, antrum, zona
pellucida, theca cells, and the nucleus of the egg.
4. (4%) Take a photo showing one of the types of follicles listed below, label follicle cells and
nucleus of the egg.

 Primordial follicle  Primary follicle  Secondary follicle

  1. (4%) Under 10x, take a photo of a corpus luteum. Label the cavity and granulosa lutein cells.
  2. (4%) Take a photo of the skeletal muscle slide under 40x, insert the photo below, and use lines arrows to label nuclei within one fiber.
  3. (4%) Take a photo of the cardiac muscle slide under 40x, insert the photo below, and use lines arrows to label a nucleus and a intercalated disc. Answer the following questions (68%):
  4. (16%, 2% each) Describe the locations of Sertoli cells, Leydig cells, granulosa cells, and theca cells in male or female reproductive system, and the functions of these cell types.
  1. (12%, 2% each) Give the definitions of the terms below: a. Graafian follicle b. Follicular atresia c. Polar body Only have nucleus d. Gametogenesis e. Acrosome reaction f. Cortical reaction
  2. (9%) About sex differentiation: a. (3%) When does it occur in humans? Week 6 b. (3%) Which gene triggers sex differentiation? The SRY gene c. (3%) Which hormones direct differentiation into males? Testosterone and TDF
  3. (7%, 1% each) Fill in blanks: a. Eggs become mature in an organ called the follicle and fetus develops in the uterus b. Before ovulation, eggs stay in a structure called ______________. After ovulation, the remaining structure in the ovary is called ______________. This structure eventually regresses into a non-functional structure called _____________.

c. The egg stays at which cell division stage at the time of fertilization? Metaphase 2 d. Fertilization occurs at which organ? Fallopian tubes

  1. (12%, 1% each) The levels of four hormones, A through D, two steroid hormones produced by the ovary and two peptide hormones produced by the anterior pituitary, are shown below. Based on their patterns in a menstrual cycle, complete the table below. Label Hormone Name Chemical Category Produced by which organ at each peak A Estrogen Steroid hormone First Spike- granulosa Second Spike-Corpus luteum B LH Peptide Hormone Anterior Pituitary
