Introduction

Marxist/Socialist

Feminism: Feminism is

much needed especially in a male dominating society where the rights and voice of women is repressed. It is basically an attempt to act, write or speak in order to identify the unjust behavior of society towards women. This theory demands equal rights of women in every field of life including equal opportunities for job and education. Marxist Feminism is a political and social movement which emerged after Marxism as they both are similar in some ways. The way capitalists were abusing the power on working class, women were abused as they worked without getting paid by anyone. They were considered slave of slaves because they were in charge of taking care of the men and reproduction of working class. They were also considered as a reserve army of labor because whenever the male force was not present or enough, women were called to work instead. Men and women were treated very differently. According to Engels, society before capitalism was matriarchal but after capitalism, it became patriarchal.

Abstract This paper in an attempt to apply Marxist Feminism on Rupi Kaur’s timeless a poem from her second book titled as the sun and her flowers which was published in 2017.

The poem is about the dominance of men in our society where everyone objectifies women and their existence. Society tries to penetrate the fear of being replaced by another young girl. In the poem, they refers to the patriarch side of society who convinced the poet that she had few good years left although she just started her career as a poet at the age of 21. The poem states that men yield power with age whereas women grow into irrelevance. Next half of the poem is about women empowerment where they are going to be ripen enough to bring out nasty. Wild. Women in them. The woman before thirties is a naïve and innocent being who tries to learn about the world but receives mistreatment from the society for being a woman. The treatment gets worse if she belongs to different race and her colour is not fair as if it was her own choice to born this way. According to Rupi, the time before forty is merely a rehearsal as the real life of a woman starts at fifties because she got to learn about the world and her status in society so she prepares herself mentally.

Conclusion:

The poem timeless is an attempt to raise voice against the gender inequality and gender discrimination with the help of author’s personal experiences where male dominant society tried to exploit her. Kaur tried to show the powerful side of women which the society needs to consider as without women the world is incomplete. If we talk about our society, fair complexion is the standard of beauty while the women with dark skin are considered inferior and are rejected by the families for marriage. They are not provided with the equal opportunities in job market. Islam is the religion which gives respect to the women but our society uses the religion to exploit them. Hazrat Khadija was the first Muslim business woman. To conclude this analysis we can say that Marxist Feminism is applicable on the selected poem.
