What Sanction Screening is and what a Sanction List is. Sanction Screening is an activity done by banks to ensure that they do not provide any form of banking services to sanctioned entities and individuals. A Sanction List is a publicly accessible list/database of companies, entities, institutions and individuals upon whom economic and/or legal restrictions have been imposed. “Sanctioned” word in Financial World implies to those Individuals and Entities, which have been found involved in Financial Crimes like Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing. A “Sanctions Screening” is an activity done as part of KYC/AML Procedures followed by a Bank that ensures that the Bank does not provide any form of Banking services to sanctioned entities and individuals. There are thousands of sanctioned people, many organizations, and even few sanctioned countries in the world (Like Iran, Russia, North Korea). A sanctions list is a publicly accessible list/database of companies, entities, institutions and individuals upon whom economic and/or legal restrictions have been imposed. Doing business with companies, organizations, or individuals, who are under sanctions, is not allowed. The purpose of sanctions lists is to combat international terrorism by restricting access of funding to terrorist groups so that they cannot plan and execute terrorist acts. The OFAC Sanctions List is released by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) in United States. These sanctions are based on current US foreign policy and national security objectives. All US Banks, Individuals and Organizations are not allowed to do any form of business with sanctions persons/entities as per the OFAC List.
United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is the most critical organization of the world to maintain peacekeeping between nations. UNSC sanctions individuals, organizations, and countries to prevent terrorism, stop money laundering, drug trafficking, and other crimes. Any other activities that may result in destabilization of world peace would also be sanctioned (like attack of Russia on Ukraine).
