Efficient Interdisciplinary Communication: SBAR for Care, Lecture notes of Communication

SBAR Communication is a care-focused technique used for effective and concise interdisciplinary communication among clinicians. It creates a shared model, transfers factual information, and provides a standardized structure. SBAR is used in various clinical contexts, including clinician-to-clinician communication, clinician-to-physician communication, staff education, debriefings, team meetings, and e-mail communication. The acronym SBAR stands for Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation. This communication technique answers the three main questions physicians have: What is the problem? What do you need me to do? When do I have to respond? SBAR promotes efficient transfer of key information and creates an environment where clinicians can express their concerns, leading to increased physician confidence, better communication, and improved patient outcomes.
