QUESTION 1
WHAT IT MEANS FOR AFRICANS TO SHOW SOLIDARITY DURING EVENTS AFFECTING THE AFRICAN
DIASPORA
The African continent is one of the brightest continents with adequate human and material resources.
The continent is endowed with rich cultural values, a serene environment with beautiful vegetative
colorations and fascinating social relationships. Africans are arguably more united than natives of any
other continent. As the saying goes, “train a child the way he should go and he will never depart from it”
so do Africans through their cultures inculcate a sense of togetherness in their indigenes. Unity and
togetherness are portrayed in the prevalent African cultural values like funerals, grand durbars, family
gatherings etc. among the natives of a particular African country. This essential value can even traced far
back into the times of colonization and independence. African countries that gained independence
earlier sought to help others in gaining theirs leading to the formation of the Pan African movement.
Today Ghana shares some of her generated power with Togo, Benin and Burkina Faso due to the peace
and unity among them. Africans believe to have originated from a common ancestor and thereby shares
common values which led to the Pan African movement which sought to bring out strategies for which
Africans can gain political liberation and eliminate some events like racism. Due to transatlantic slave
trade, millions of Africans got dispersed throughout Europe and America others too in search of greener
pastures migrated to these areas. These Africans are termed as the African Diaspora. African Diaspora
have and continues to play a key role in the development of Africa. They contribute greatly to the
continent through tourism, remittances etc. The African Diaspora plays a key role in bridging the gaps
between African and non-African countries via the display of African cultures worldwide, they also help
the continent in humanitarian emergencies. Recently, Ghana declared a year of return which brought
many Africans in the diaspora home, contributing to the development of the country. For years now
Africans in the diaspora have suffered from issues such as racism which involves unjust treatments,
unfair working conditions and all sorts of physical and verbal abuse. Africans on the African continent
have been expressing their solidarity and support during events affecting the African diaspora due to the
love and togetherness that exist among them and such incidences include, racism and mistreatments
some Africans faced in Guangzhou following the spread of the novel Coronavirus disease and the
murder of George Floyd, a Black American by some US police officials.
Unfair treatments, racism, and injustice are what Africans in the diaspora encounters. However due to
the love and unity that binds all Africans worldwide, African countries, African unions and movements
and as well as their elites always express their solidarity to their colleagues abroad while rising to the
occasion and getting the issues resolved on behalf of their fellows. A typical example occurred in
Guangzhou, China. Africans were alleged of being responsible for the spread and escalation of the novel
Coronavirus disease. Although this accusation was not grounded on any fact, some Africans in
Guangzhou suffered mistreatments, some got evicted from their homes over fears they could spread the
disease. Some African countries expressed their dissension on this attitude of discrimination and
presented several reports and complaints to the Chinese government. African ambassadors in the
country united with support from some other African countries like Ghana, Nigeria and Kenya and rose
to the occasion and by legal means got the Chinese government to put in place measures to curb the
issue. Other Africans expressed their solidarity to their fellows via social media. Hashtags

#ChinaMustExplain and others trended on twitter and on other social media platforms. African celebrities, legislators and others also expressed their outrage, condemning the treatment their fellow citizens were suffering from whiles others also demanded their fellows return home. We are Africans and we believe unity is strength. To stand together and fight for one another is what our forefathers taught us. Africans will always be there for one another till justice is attained. The Africans in diaspora, for years have been suffering from White’s supremacy. Africans worldwide, irrespective of wealth, educational status are looked down upon. They suffer from lack of respect, injustice and unfair treatments. Recently, the death of George Floyd, a Black American, caused by police officers in the US aroused the persistence of racism and discrimination in the world. Many African communities expressed their disgust and sought justice for the Black American who got murdered by the police officials. Many African countries protested in solidarity condemning the unfair treatments and racial injustice following the incidence. The chairman of the African union community, Moussa Faki Mahamat, expressed his dissension with the actions of the US security forces and held the US government responsible for this incidence. Other prominent personnel on the African continent also called for accountability following the arrest of the police officers on third degree murder and manslaughter charges. Several African writers also published articles seeking for all Africans and African leaders to join in a fight and protest to demand for social justice and respect for the black race. Several African footballers also expressed their solidarity and support for George whiles demanding justice. An example is Senegalese player, Sadio Mane who joined many other Africans on social media to express their disgust on the incidence using the hashtag, #BlackLivesMatter. These incidences prove anything that goes on against any African in the diaspora matters very much to their colleagues on the African continent irrespective of the nationality. Black lives matter and indeed it means a lot to all Africans. Being an African means more, it’s not about selfishness but always about being there for one another whenever the need arises. Africa is a land of peace and true unity. They are inspired by the love for their continent and always seek for the progress and development of each other. One can never hurt an African and expect the continent to be silent. Africans will always rise and demand justice for any of them that becomes a victim to any sort of abuse or racism. We are Africans and our lives matter and we will continue to fight for each other until justice and is attained.
