TERM 1
Definitions (homeostasis)
DEFINITION 1
Homeostasis is the process of maintaining a constantinternal
environment inthe body.
TERM 2
Coordinating systems
DEFINITION 2
The two main coordinating systems i n the human body are the
nervous and endocrine systems. The nervous system is
responsible for coordinating all of the b ody's activities. It controls
not only the maintenance of norma l functions but also the body's
ability to cope with emergency situa tions. The endocrine system is
the body system of glands that produc e and secrete hormones
into the bloodstream in order to regu late processes in various
organs.
TERM 3
Tolerance range
DEFINITION 3
Organisms have an optimum level (id eal range) for internal
conditions E.g. temperature, water, s ugar of the blood, etc. If the
internal is outside this optimal range, b ut the organism can still
survive, it is called the tolerance ran ge. The tolerance range and
the optimum level are set through t he process of
homeostasis.Homeostas is is the process of maintaining a
constantinternal environment inthe body.
TERM 4
Name Stimulus and
Response
DEFINITION 4
A stimulus is a change in the environment of an organism.
After detecting astimulus, organisms must provide
aresponsein order to account for the change. A tropism is
aresponsethat an organism makes to a stimulus.
TERM 5
Negative Feedback Loop
DEFINITION 5
Negative feedbackis a reaction that causes a decrease in
function. It occurs in response to some kind of stimulus.
Often it causes the output of asystemto be lessened; so,
thefeedbacktends to balance thesystem.

Coordinating systems

DEFINITION 2 The two main coordinating systems in the human body are the nervous and endocrine systems. The nervous system is responsible for coordinating all of the body's activities. It controls not only the maintenance of normal functions but also the body's ability to cope with emergency situations. The endocrine system is the body system of glands that produce and secrete hormones into the bloodstream in order to regulate processes in various organs. TERM 3

Tolerance range

DEFINITION 3 Organisms have an optimum level (ideal range) for internal conditions E.g. temperature, water, sugar of the blood, etc. If the internal is outside this optimal range, but the organism can still survive, it is called the tolerance range. The tolerance range and the optimum level are set through the process of homeostasis. Homeostasis is the process of maintaining a constantinternal environment inthe body. TERM 4

Name Stimulus and

Response

DEFINITION 4 A stimulus is a change in the environment of an organism. After detecting astimulus, organisms must provide aresponsein order to account for the change. A tropism is aresponsethat an organism makes to a stimulus. TERM 5

Negative Feedback Loop

DEFINITION 5 Negative feedbackis a reaction that causes a decrease in function. It occurs in response to some kind of stimulus. Often it causes the output of asystemto be lessened; so, thefeedbacktends to balance thesystem.

Positive Feedback Loop

Feedback loops are biological mechanisms where homeostasis is maintained. This occurs when the product or output of an event or reaction changes the organisms response to that reaction. Positive feedback occurs to increase the change or output: the result of a reaction is amplified to make it occur more quickly. TERM 7

Different types of neuron

DEFINITION 7 Three types of Neurons- Sensory neurons transmit information from sensory receptors to the C entral N ervous S ystem- Relay neurons (interneurons) transmit information within the CNS as part of the decision-making process - Motor neurons transmit information from the CNS to effectors (muscles or glands) , in order to initiate a response TERM 8

Arteries vs Veins

DEFINITION 8 Arteries carry oxygenated blood away from the heart to the body, and veins carry de-oxygenated blood back from the body to the heart. TERM 9

CNS vs PNS

DEFINITION 9 CNS:the part of the nervous system composed of the brain and spinal cordPNS:made up of sensory and motor neurons. It connects the central nervous system to the rest of the body and detects and responds to change. TERM 10

ADH Antidiuretic

Hormone

DEFINITION 10 ADH is responsible for regulating the amount of water in the blood and is released from the pituitary gland based on signals from the hypothalamus, which detects the water levels of the blood.
