This course is the capstone requirement for students in Asian and Pacific Studies. It is
meant to be an opportunity for students to draw together the various strands in the different
academic courses taken and to focus much more closely on a specific topic interested. Keep in
mind, therefore, the two points about your proposed thesis: it should show integrated and
interdisciplinary work.
This class will meet for the first two weeks for discussions and guidance on possible
topics. After the first two weeks, students will meet and submit their work according to the
following schedule:
Proposal due February 1, Tuesday
Outline of essay due March 1, Tuesday
Presentation March 8-17
First draft due April 12, Tuesday
Final bound copy due May , Friday
GUIDELINES
1. There are no formal class sessions. However you will be required to meet with your thesis
adviser on a regular basis (every two or three weeks). The exact timetable will be arranged
between you and him/her. It is important to plan your timetable at the beginning.
2. You will be expected to submit a one-page single-spaced typed proposal/plan for your
thesis. The proposal should include the following information:
A statement of your thesis
Objectives
The proposed development of topic
The sources to be consulted
A statement of how this work will integrate your ASPA studies.
3. You will be expected to give a presentation on your thesis to ASPA faculty and students. (
details will be discussed in class).
4. The final draft of your thesis should not be fewer than 40 pages, doubled-spaced. It should
be presented in accordance with the LMU Style Manual. It will be bound at ASPA’s cost.
