Maxillary central incisor Definition They are two in number Occupy either side of midline Most prominent teeth Great esthetic value Larger in all dimensions than lateral incisor Labial aspect The side facing the lip is called labial aspect Crown It is trapezoidal in shape Slight cervical convergence Cervicaloincisal length is 2mm more than the mesiodistal Outlines Mesial outline is slightly convex with contact area at third incisal third close to meiso-incisal angle Distal outline is more convex than mesial outline, contact area is close to middle and incisal one third Cervical outline is semicircular with curvature towards the root Incisal outline is represented by incisal edge which is straight and regular with sharp meiso- incisal angle and slightly rounded disto-incisal edge Labial surface It is smooth with convexity at cervical third Surface becomes relatively flat as the incisal edge is approached Two vertical depressions are seen on the labial surface which represents three different lobes Root Conical shape, broader at 1/ rd Relatively blunt apex Distal tilt is seen
Lingual aspect Surface of tooth facing the tongue Crown The lingual outline of maxillary central incisor is opposite of labial outline The crown and root show convergence towards the lingual side which makes mesial and distal aspect visible from this side Lingual surface shows convexities and concavities There is a convex are called cingulum Placed at cervical 3 rd , more towards the distal side in meiso distal direction Marginal ridges border either side of the lingual surface Mesial side shows mesial marginal ridge, distal side shows distal marginal ridge MMR is slightly longer than DMR because of cingulum Incisal boundary is formed by lingo incisal ride Concavities Major area of the lingual aspect is occupied by lingual fossa It is M shaped Superiorly bordered by Cingulum, inferiorly by lingo incisal ridge By DMR and MMR on either side A deep developmental groove maybe present on the lingual surface extending onto the cingulum Cervical outline is semicircular with curvature towards the root Root Root is lingually converged and conical in shape with blunt rounded apex Cross section of root is triangular with rounded edge
Incisal aspect Incisal aspect is cutting/ biting surface of the tooth Features can be described best when the tooth is held in such a way that incisal edge is facing towards the observer Root will be visible as it is superimposed over the crown Shape It is triangular from this aspect Base on labial surface and apex towards the cingulum Mesiodistal dimension is greater than labiolingual Labial aspect shows semicircular arch Lingual aspect is tapered and more convex at the cingulum Slight distolingual twist of the incisal edge is seen DMR, MMR, lingual fossa and cingulum can be appreciated on the lingual aspect Developmental variations Shovel shaped: prominent mesial and distal marginal ridges Deep lingual pit: Deep lingual pit at the incisal border of cingulum. Prone to caries Accessory lingual pit: Vertical ridges may be seen extending from cingulum to incisal edge Talon’s cusp: Cingulum becomes very prominent, prone to dental caries and interfere with occlusion Screwdriver shaped central incisor: Congenital syphilis may cause screwdriver shape of central incisor, mesial and distal outlines converge incisally making incisal 1/ rd narrower than cervical 1/3rd
