Probability: Understanding Simple Probability and Odds, Study notes of Algebra

An introduction to the concepts of probability and odds, focusing on simple events. It includes definitions, formulas, and examples for calculating probabilities and odds. Students will learn how to find the probability of an event and the odds against an event, using reduced fractions, decimals, or percentages.

What you will learn

  • What is the difference between probability and odds?
  • How do you find the probability of rolling an even number on a die?
  • What is probability and how is it calculated?

2.6: Probability: Simple Probability and Odds

Hawaii Content and Performance Standards IIIStandard 14: Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability: PROBABILITY: Understand and apply basic notions of chance and probability. Objectives:  To find the probability of a simple event.  To find the odds of a simple event.

Probability

Definition: Probability is the ratio of the number of favorable outcomes for an event to the total number of possible outcomes for the event. A list of sample outcomes is a list of all possible outcomes. Formula:

# of favorable outcomes ܽ

total # of possible outcomes

Calculating Probability:  Write answer as a reduced fraction, decimal, or percent.  The calculated probability should be between 0 and 1 inclusive. [Algebra 1(X)]

Example 1: Find Probabilities of Simple Events

a.) Find the probability of rolling an even number on a die. b.) A bowl contains 5 pink chips, 7 blue chips, 6 purple chips, and 10 green chips. One chip is randomly drawn. Find P ( b ). c.) A bowl contains 5 pink chips, 7 blue chips, 6 purple chips, and 10 green chips. One chip is randomly drawn. Find P ( pink or purple ). d.) A bowl contains 5 pink chips, 7 blue chips, 6 purple chips, and 10 green chips. One chip is randomly drawn. Find P ( not green ).
