Hope for a Change By Zhen Wei Fang Barack Obama is the most important person in 2008 because he is a president-elect of the United States of America and the first African American to be elected President of the United States. His term of office begins January 20, 2009 as the 44 th^ U.S. president. This is a new era of the American history. He represents a sign of change in the future of the United States of America. Also he embodies the zeitgeist of 2008. He reflects the desire for positive change in the economy, social equality, and peace of the country. Today our economy is going through the greatest financial crisis since the great depression. For many people their debt and mortgage became very hard to bear as inflation and unemployment rose. President- elect Barack Obama stressed the need for Congress to pass a fiscal stimulus measure. One idea endorsed by Obama is extending unemployment benefits, which would not only help Americans thrown out of work but would probably be spent promptly on the necessities of life. Another obvious option is putting a large share of the money into infrastructure programs, to build and repair roads, bridges, sewers and mass transit lines. Those would require the hiring of workers while boosting purchases of steel, asphalt and all sorts of other commodities. (Chicago Tribune, Nov 8, 2008) Meanwhile, the result of today’s terrible situation shows the failure of our old policies and strategy on our economy. For instance, the war cost us 12 billion dollars a month in Iraq. It is a wrong political move to be involved in the war with Iraq. Damages not only done to lives it also damaged our economy. With our new leader, Obama promises to bring back the soldiers from Iraq and recover our economy with all of his abilities. Since “we the people” are looking forward to a positive change in this country, the first step was made on the date when Obama won the election for the presidency. The history of a long line of white presidencies was broken. By being the first African American President he shows changes that were made through out the fight of racial and social equality. According to Terry, many people expected

packing scholarship, and he was ready to make his dream to change in America come true. (Carla Marinucci, Saturday, November 8, 2008)) As anyone knows the economic in America are suffering the greatest financial crisis since the great depression. I believe that one of the reason people elected Obama is that they believe that he can help the American economy rise back up to the top. We can look back at the debate between Obama and senate Mc Cant by the look and react of Obama he really have the confident to bring back the American economy back to where we are. Obama promise that he will open 2600 more jobs in the next 2 years to make the unemployment rate lower. (Kevin Fagan, September 14,

The speech that Barack Obama has, I believe it really emotional to every one. Especially for the young age people that had voted for him. Everything in the speech that Obama said has repeated everything that he promise the people in America that he going to do. He is a very respectful man in order to come out in front of his campaign and thank them for the supports. His speech makes me imagine he isn’t the only winner in this election, we all are winners. Without our voters this wouldn’t be the historical moments in our life and in American history. After this year election, Obama make me believe race, color, culture, gay, or lesbian it doesn’t matter if you have the confident in your self and the goal you set to make it come true nothing is impossible. If you have the confident you can make every one surrounds you a winner. Obama said “if one of the people in the United States have problem we can sit down and have a meeting about that problem”. “If we can come together as a nation we can get everything done, and nothing can stop us” said Obama. Those two quotes tell us that Barack Obama our next 4 years president will be a better president and will do a better job to bring the American back to the top of the world. President-Elect— Barack Obama By Angeles Torres Starting on January 20th, 2009 Barack Obama became the new United States President. Mr. Obama was elected because he is very intelligent, thoughtful and hardworking. He has in his life a vision and inspiration to do great things; That is why I believe the American people chose him for our next president. He is intelligent because he has attended some of the greatest schools, such as Columbia University, for college and then after he attended Harvard Law School. While at Harvard he was a student who succeeded academically. He became the first Black president of the Harvard Law Review (Contemporary Black Biography) Mr. Obama is thoughtful and caring about those who are less fortunate. He has worked as a community organizer in Chicago by helping low income people who only having a small amount of resources. He could have taken on a better paying job after becoming a high- ranking attorney but Mr. Obama decided he would help the poor residents of Chicago instead. He has also showed that he is thoughtful by taking on the political role as a junior Senator of Illinois while still being a good husband and family man. He also demonstrates how he is

considerate of others by the policies he believes in, for example universal health care and lowering the property taxes of senior citizens (Contemporary Black Biography) President Obama is aware of all the problems he will face as the economy of this country gets worst and worst but through all of this he promises to extend democracy through the United States but the rest of the Americas also. For example, he plans to better the relationship between the USA and Latin American countries by implementing “free presses, progressive police forces, religious freedom, continue the battle against drug smuggling by confronting these problems not just with force but with corruption prosecutions and crackdowns on drug lords” (Schelsinger). We made a great decision by electing him as the 44 th President of the United States because he brings hope and a good change to the antiquated system that the Bush administration has set in place for the last eight years. He reflects the desire for positive change in economy, social equality, and peace for the country. Source Citation: “Barack Obama.” Contemporary Black Biography. Vol. 79. Thompson Gale, 2005. US News, 11 Nov. 2008: http:// www.usnes.com/mobile/articles _mobile/for-president-elect Honorable John McCain By: Salam Gheith When I heard about John McCain this year 2008, I was watching Arabic news and I heard about him this year for the election, so my dad told me about John McCain, like he was born on August 29, 1936, he was the U.S. House Representatives in 1982, and. Before I had never heard of him, but I saw the news and my dad told me about him, and I saw him on T.V. Now I know a lot about him. McCain is a successful man, honorable, and a strong achiever. McCain was trying to do his best in his life because he wanted to help his country and to make his achievement for his country. McCain was successful because he was a champion of the issue of campaign finance reform with Democratic support in 2002 because John McCain and Russ Feingold raised $ million for the Federal Election Commission and Republican candidates. He became a senator who gained a national constituency. In 2005, McCain and Joe Lieberman, announced that the reintroduced the Climate Stewardship Academy. Congress debated a $700 billion plan for the financial system aid. McCain gave support for plan to the Republican congress (With McCain- page 16). McCain is honorable because he ran against George W. Bush in 2000; John McCain failed in the election against Bush. In 2008, McCain was the Republican running for the election. His father and grandfather loved the US Navy, and his father was serving in the navy. McCain was sent to high school, Episcopal High School in Alexandria. McCain graduated from high school in 1954. After he graduated from high school, he followed the family tradition to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis,

military service and its families while they are active so we must help them to adapt to the civil life when they terminate to them, and that we must honor and never to forget the service of which gave their lives by us. McCain continued the tradition of the McCain family serving to its country as their father and his grandfathers did. When I say a strong man, I am not talking about his physical feature when he was captured and was put in prison. He changed by being a stronger character and making decisions that helped him out. He does not care now about immigrants will be affected if his team wins the election. Our society depends on the president. Some people think that he will not do a good job because hes almost an old person. He spends a lot of money and he always had a positive attitude about it. Most Americans wanted McCain to become a president because he makes strong decision. The nation of the United States needs a dedicated leadership to serve the interests as the country generally and not of groups in particular, and a government that renders accounts and fulfills its duties with integrity and common sense. John McCain always has thought that our borders must be safe and that the federal government has failed enormously in its responsibility to assure them. I think that he wants to punish employers who hire illegal immigrant. He was requiring illegal immigrant to resolve their status but some people cannot do like me. I have been working in this country almost three years and I pay taxes but it is impossible to resolve my status and also I heard that he wants to run background checks on all illegal immigrants this is not fear that a president does that. He was saying that all illegal immigrants would have to either leave the country or follow the path of citizen. I was surprised because I have never heard a president mentions immigrants status. In other hand, he wanted to fix economic crisis and he wants to help the people who are losing their house this will be a good help for them who does not want lose their houses. We must have the right to give opinions. Maybe this election will change our lives. We can see how a president brings hope or sadness. Work Cited: "John S. McCain." Newsmakers , Issue 4. Saturday, November 1, 2008. “McCain steps up attacks: Obama up in early vote “http://wwwsfgate.com/cgi- bin/article.cgi Sarah Palin By Qiansha Wu Forty-four-year-old Sarah Palin has been a governor in Alaska since 2006. Sarah Palin was born in Sandpoint, Idaho in the 11th of February,

  1. She is the third of four children in a spirited, sports-mad family. When her father took a teaching job in Skagway after a few months, her parents moved to the Valley in Alaska. She graduated from her high school in Wasilla and earned her journalism degree at Idaho University (Gale Biography Resource Center, 2009). She is best known since she became a

running mate for John McCain during the president election of the United States in 2008. Although she has a lot of negative reviews while she is a running mate for John McCain, she still has many positive traits that are competitive, intelligent and caring. Sarah Palin is an outdoors woman who likes to hunt, ride snow mobiles, play hockey and ice fish. She grew up with a sports-mad family. As like many Alaskan teenagers, she grew up to become a passionate sport fisher and hunter. She was co-captain of the Wasilla Warriors Women’s basketball team, which won the 1982 title of state championship. She proved that she was an exceptional athlete. Also, she married a man who is a four-time winner of the 2,000- mile iron Dog snowmobile race (Gale Biography Resource Center, 2009). It shows that she is extremely involved by sports. On the other hand, Sara Palin became mayor in 1999, and she lost a race for lieutenant governor in 2002. Nevertheless, she beat former Governor Tony Knowles in the general election, and she became a governor in Alaska in 2006 (Coile, 2008). She is not only competitive in sports, but also in other areas of subjects. Sarah Palin overcame many obstacles because of her competitive nature by using her intelligence to beat many of male senators to become the first female governor of Alaska. Also she is the youngest one ever chosen to lead the state. As she was a governor, she reduced property tax levels which made the business environment attractive. She increased taxes on oil companies to give Alaskans a rebate. According to Coile, “she pushed through a windfall profits tax on big oil companies, which generated billions and allowed the state to give $1,200 back to each Alaska resident” (Coile, 2008). She promoted solutions to meet the needs of Alaska’s communities because of her role. She served as “Oil and Gas Conservation Commission” and “Oil and Compact Commission.” She also served on many boards and commission in the states (Gale Biography Resource Center, 2008). Her intelligent and overcoming obstacles lean to her success. Since Sarah Palin married Todd Palin, and they have had five children who are growing healthy. Sarah and her husband play an important role in their family life as the commercially fish together. She is very caring about her family; as well as, caring about her sister, too. Johnson says that Sarah Palin used her power to fire the public safety commissioner who wouldn’t expel her ex-brother-in-law from state trooper’s position. The reason of that is a state trooper was involved in a messy divorce from Sarah Palin’s sister (Johnson, 2008). Even though using power for personal use is wrong, she cares a lot about her sister. Although it may be negative, she is still very caring. She was known for being a vice-president candidate from John McCain’s election. Moreover, She famous her many negative reviews. She was portrayed poorly by the media; however, she is very competitive, smart and considerate. Because of her personality, she will make a bid for presidency in 2012 (Johnson, 2008). Hillary Clinton By Hong Hue, Bui Hillary Clinton reflects women’s highest hopes and deepest fears about the workplace. She is the world’s top diplomat woman and she paves the way for a future female president after the election. She almost became the most powerful woman in the world, the United States president in 2008. Even though she didn’t win the election but she still works so hard to serve this country and she influences the world by becoming Secretary of State. She is inspiring, she supports the military especially female soldiers, and she is very powerful woman in political as well. Looking back ten years ago, Hillary was still a first lady whose had hairstyles were the subject of late-night shows that people made fun of her. Now she will be the world’s top diplomat. She works with the most powerful man in the world, Barack Obama. Her position as a State Secretary is very important to the security of the USA and the world. She makes people in the whole world look at women differently with a lot of respect and she inspires women in the way that women can do anything to better themselves and even become part of politics to work as fair as men. Gloria Steinem said in an interview when ‘she was asked about Hillary, she said, “Secretary of states is far superior to vice president, because it’s involved in continuously solving and making policy and not being on standby.” And Liz Kuoppala, a city council in Eveleth said, “As a senator, you’re just 1 of 100, and she’s had to play quiet and polite.” She also said she thinks the job Hillary is doing will allow her to grow and added, “It’s good for women everywhere.”(Kantor, 2008). I’ m sure that Mrs. Clinton will face a lot challenges with her new position but she will always be our inspiration and we always look up and learn from her to keep working hard to achieve our goals. At a lunch on Capital Hill honoring military women, Mrs. Clinton said that she became interested in the military in

  1. She was 27 and her recruiter was 21, and male. He insulted her and told her that she was too old to join the marines because she was a woman. She decided to look for another way to serve this country. She told people that story to illustrate how far women can come. It’s not the case that women are turned away by the military recruiters. She really praises women who devote their lives to military service. She was president of the student government at Wellesley College. She had organized teach-ins protest against Vietnam War. She was also a Yale law school graduate who had worked on the anti-war President campaigns of Eugene J. McCarthy and George McGovern. And then she moved to Arkansas to be with Bill Clinton and they got married. (Dowd, 1994). She didn’t become a military woman but she never gave up her dream in politics to do so much more for her country. Hillary will become U.S. Secretary of State in 2009. She is a very important person in the US. She will contribute to make decisions for this country with Mr. Obama’s team. At this time when this country has to deal with a lot of obstacles. We still remain in two wars and also have to face the threat of terrorism. She will support a national team with a lot of centrist characters. ( Baker,2008). Her help will be a

big impact to the government’s decisions and will be very thoughtful with all the years that she had experienced with her husband as a First Lady. With the new position she will contribute her political knowledge to make the right choices for this country to get over this difficult time. All her accomplishments would be viewed as a light for other women to follow. Maybe soon someday we will have a female president. Through many years since I learned about Hillary Clinton as the first lady of the USA, the most powerful country in the world to a secretary of state, in my mind I always wonder how can a woman can be so successful like her; how can she work with a lot of powerful men and be equal to them even though she might be still in a more powerful man’s shadow like Mr. Obama. She will be strong as a women leader and always have that positive, big smile on her face. She makes women and men around the world believe that women can do a lot more than what they’ve been taught inside their house. Women can be in the services as men, and women can be in political fields to devote their ability and talent to serve their country. Women can work and have their roles like men. She is my inspiration and she makes me think that I can be who I want to be in the future. Work cited: Kantor, Jodi. “Another Triumph for Clinton, Many Women Agree”. Hillary Rodham Clinton in the Political World By Roxana Guzman Hillary Clinton is one of the most important women of the United States of America. She has been accepted to become secretary of state in Obama’s administration. He chose to turn a rival into a partner. The role would make her an influential person. She is a powerful woman in the actual political world. With her the United States will obtain advantages on important issues because she is a competent lawyer and she is a very prepared politician. Hillary Clinton is a competent layer and a smart woman because she know how to improve her abilities in important issues in United States. “She was attending laws school and graduated from Yale University Law School in 1973 which further refined her experience in child laws issues” (Encyclopedia of World Biography, 2008). She spent a lot of time working in children’s issues and juvenile justice problems and woman’s rights. She was accepted to a teaching position al the University of Arkansas law school. Taking advantage of her good qualities and smart decisions she became an exceptional lawyer, helping her community.

34 th^ years and reelected five times. Joe Biden is different when compared with other democrats because he is a supporter of leftist causes. He voted in favor of immigrants in 1980 and for amnesty in

  1. Biden helped the President Bush during the attack againt Iraq and voted against abuses of power. (Mcmanus, 2008). Joe Biden is very intelligent because he started his career young and still working+. He is good person because he wants help immigrants voting in favor of amnesty. Joe Biden will be very important to Barack Obama. He is very experienced and that can be necessary to create a new foreign policy. Biden is an influential senator, so, he will be helpful at improving relations mainly in senate, a an influential senator who has traveled around the world. (Walsh, 2008). His experience will help U.S. against the crisis, creating new laws and other ways to control the situation. Joe Biden had some problems with A catholic organization because he made comments in favor of abortion and the Catholic Church is against the abortion. According to Catholic Church, life beginning at conceptions is a matter faith. Biden said that Catholics can’t impose what they think, they need to accept the laws.(Biden, 2008). I think that Biden can’t impose his opinion about that, he need hear what the population think about abortion first. This is the best way. Joe Biden is very intelligent. Today he is one of the most important men of America, the vice president. He is an idealist who has his own ideas and them puts into practice. He believes in justice and is not afraid to say to say what he thinks. Source Citation : McManus, John F. "Joe Biden Biography." The New American 23.25 (Dec10, ): 24(1). GeneralOneFile. Gal e. Since I have read about his biography, I have admired him. He is a very successful man who is strong, famous and a motivated man. According to Gale Biography, he became a body builder, a movie star, a wealthy business man and a successful politician. Arnold Schwarzenegger was born in Austria. At the age of 20, he won Mr. Olympia title crown. After his first trip to the United States he won Mr. Universe, Mr. World and Junior Mr. Europe. Then he retired from

body building and invested in the mail order business related to bodybuilding and fitness magazines as well as in real estate. Later he found success in one of his main life goal and became a film actor. As an actor, he was a famous Hollywood actor such as in the Terminator, the Predator and the True Lines. He had an approach to action movie heroes. Arnold Schwarzenegger has become 38 th governor of California in 2003 and his governorship is approaching in the final years of his term because he is not qualified to be governor again. Arnold Schwarzenegger is very motivated. He has promoted a California ballot initiative to provide funds for after-school programs for children proved successful. He donated $ 1 million of his own money to the children fund. Arnold Schwarzenegger has changed the Californian’s quality of life. Therefore, he has justified his strength in body building, endurance in business, ability in acting and fairness in politics and shown his accomplishment to all Americans. By Boniek Almeida First time I read about Dianne Feinstein it was in a newspaper article about Jonestown and the killed of the mayor George Moscone and the homosexual supervisor Harvey Milk by the supervisor Dan White. It was a frustrated time for San Francisco’s citizen called “The Ten Days That Shook the City”. Jennings, Jonestown and the city hall assassinations (2008). Feinstein had heading the mayoralty post. She had an influent background, exhausted middle career due to family and professional decrease and successful in her political career. Dianne was born to a Jewish father and a Catholic Russian American mother. Dianne had an influent background studying in a catholic middle school and attended in a Jewish temple which creates in her a deep respect for religious differences. When she was 16 she started to go to city council meeting brought by her kindly uncle. She also enrolled at Stanford studying political science and was a very smart student. (Gale.”Dianne Biography,

Feinstein married 3 times; she divorced from her first husband who she had a daughter and her second husband died in the same year her father passed away, after that she married Richard Blum an investment banker. Dianne ran for mayor two times and after her last lost she told writer Jerome Brondfield: “I

is cunning. He broke his promise to the people of San Francisco. He was the person who easily forgot his promise before when he wanted the position on the city‘s board of supervisors. The people in San Francisco believed he was a good person when they voted for him as a San Francisco mayoral candidate. A liar doesn’t tell the truth and he is the same as the person who is breaking the promise. He promised the city was going to support healthcare for adults and children and the homeless by providing shelter, counseling, and treatment; but he could not make it half way through his first year as mayor(Gavin Newsom, 2008). That gave me a bad feeling, but I learned the value of promise is important for other people. Most people in the San Francisco heard the news of Gavin Newsom’s bad behavior. Do you want a person to be mayor who has bad behavior? The best leader has to be a brave person and be a good example to the people. But he gave the bad example; he was a playboy, and he had a drinking problem. After he divorced his wife, Kimberly Guilfoyle Newsom, he had an affair with a staffer married to his closet friend, and most officers lose trust in him. (Gavin Newsom, 2008). For example, kids learn quickly from adults. So it is too dangerous for kids to know about the Mayor’s bad behavior. The idea of “Proposition 8 or a ban on same sex marriage” was so weird that showed he is cunning. He thought it was the right time to be fair for the people who wanted same sex marriage. The people who against “Proposition 8” were not discriminating against them, but we had to stop them. One day first graders didn’t go to school and attended the wedding ceremony of their lesbian teacher that Gavin Newsom performed. (Erin Allday, 2008). This was the first time they saw this kind of ceremony, and they weren’t in doubt about it. Kids are innocent and they don’t know about the people in the real world. Most people and their parent complained to them it wasn’t right thing to show the kids; they went against “Proposition 8.” Gavin Newsom was the bigger loser in “Yes on Proposition 8” that didn’t pass (Allday, 2008). My opponents respected gays and lesbians; they say it isn’t their fault because they were born with different genes from normal people, but it wasn’t fair for normal people. What is their family life; can they live with own kids or not? They couldn’t have their own kids although they could adopt orphans. Most religious people don’t believe in same sex marriage. I wrote what I believed; but I didn’t want to be mean to gays and lesbians. Hugo Chavez. The first time I heard about him was during my break time. The news was on TV, and he sent a message to Gorge Bush the United Stated President. “You are a donkey” he said. That is why he captured my attention, what a way to get attention from people; He has done good thing for his county but he decided to insult people to capture people attention. Searching deep in his biography, I found that he has done positive things for his county. But recently, he is trying to put his Venezuela in a bad position. Venezuela is one of the biggest exporting nations of oil in the world. Something is wrong in Hugo’s mind. He has shown courage, He has shown Cheating for his country, and insulting actions. He moved to San Jose, California with his single mother and younger brother when he was 10. Jerry Yang received his B.S and M.S degrees in electrical engineering from Stanford University. During his college, he and his friend David Filo created a search engine. They enjoyed surfing the internet and their friends began using their guide to doing online directories. It was known then as “Jerry and David’s Guide to the World Wide Web.” Later, they changed the name to Yahoo. Yahoo! Inc was the most successful internet media industry and popular search engine in 1990’s. During almost twenty year’s internet businesses, Jerry Yang made Yahoo a success in the world, also he caused Yahoo failure. Jerry Yang made Yahoo a success in the world when he

and David Filo turned Yahoo into a business in 1995. Yahoo! Inc quickly became one of the worlds’ most recognized brands and one of the most highly studied websites in the world. By 1996, the Yahoo went public in a highly triumphant Initial Public Offering. According to Fortune “In 2008, Jerry’s wealth was worth at $ 2.3 billion, he is the 524th^ richest person in the world.” The reason he caused Yahoo’s failure is because he made a few bad decisions. After he took charge from the ex-term CEO at Yahoo, in 2007, when Jerry Yang became the CEO. He had to face the competition from Google Inc. Google is one of the largest and most popular search engine in the 21 st^ century. Google took many advertising partnerships from Yahoo; also the financial blows are the main difficulty that Yahoo faces. In the summer of 2007 Jerry didn’t accept an offer of $33 per share from Microsoft Corp. By summer of 2008, Yahoo’s shares closed at $ 10.63. Many investors blamed Jerry Yang didn’t make the right decision during the difficult time. In August 1, 2008, Jerry Yang was elected as the CEO of the Yahoo’s annual investors meeting in San Jose. Although Jerry Yang is stepping down from his role as CEO, it might not help Yahoo to overcome the complex situation. Jerry Yang is like a mythic story to me. He started his business from nothing, to $ 2.3 billion and he is also the # 8 of 100 Most Successful Asian entrepreneurs in America, at the end he still has to step down from his CEO position. The first time I read about him, it was very interesting because of the way he had been helping the people of his country Bangladesh, especially women. Muhammad Yuns is, inventive, successful, and merciful Muhammad Yunus is inventive because he invented a program called microcredit with the purpose to eradicate poverty in his native country Bangladesh. At the same time, he knew how to help people to have a better life and he implemented a system of requirements for the borrower which were the 16 decisions, based on unity, hard work, respect, prosperity of the families, health of every member of the family, education, cleanliness, not having the curse of dowry and having their children make their own decision about who to marry. “He developed an experiment with two other researchers, in which he lent money to a group o borrowers and tracked the results. The experiment was successful: the debts to Yunus were repaid in full and on time. He continued to develop the lending model until succeeded in founding the Grameen or “Village” Bank in Bangladesh in 1983” It could be a great thing, if every time we saw an opportunity to help someone, we could do it.
