says "oh! his niece is in town" - Not lying

Pattern perception- If you meet someone at different times
or situations - You may look for consistency or patterns - Ex.
Sitting next to someone in class everyday and from that you
form your impression - When we make impressions we don't
get enough information so we fill in the blanks with
information we do have

- When someone behaves in a partic ular way we make a judgment
about how or why they are behaving that way - Doesn't generally
focus on the situation - Situation- the specific situation someone is
in that caused the behavior - Disposit ion- someone's personality,
not the situation - Fundamental attri bution error- when we say it's
the disposition and it's not

DEFINITION 7 When an individual in a crowd doesn't feel personally responsible for doing something bad or not doing something good TERM 8

Deindividuation

DEFINITION 8 Becoming part of the crowd, losing your individualism - Anonymity- Being just another face in the crowd - Social facilitation- when people act better than they would alone - Jumping to someone's aid if other people are too Social loafing- not doing work for a project expecting their name will go on the final product TERM 9

Bystander Effect

DEFINITION 9

  • Kitty Genovese - Ambiguity- Don't realize it's truly an emergency
  • Pluralistic ignorance- If it was really an emergency, someone would help, no one's helping so it must not be an emergency - Diffusion of responsibility- no one person feels entirely responsible
  • Families viewed as sacred institution, so no one intervenes - Large crowds won't respond TERM 10

Obedience

DEFINITION 10

  • Seems to be more situation based than personality based - Being another person's agent - Not responsible for the things you do - Reinterpretation (routinization) - Start small then go to more horrible things - You can get used to anything - Good manners - Entrapment - Just feel like you have to keep going - Dehumanization - Ethnic slurs, learner vs. teacher - Easier to hurt someone without a face
