Excel Assignment #2b GRED 534
A. Read the Candy is Dandy lesson plan thoroughly.
1. Briefly describe the lesson plan.
This lesson gets students to think about research by researching the different colors in a
number of bags of M&Ms. The students are going to look at websites and send letters to
the company on their findings. Another big part of this lesson plan in the technology
aspect. Students will get acquainted with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
2. What similarities and difference do you see between the lesson plan structure used for
Candy is Dandy and the lesson plan structure we use for New York State?
This lesson plan has many aspects in which NYS uses in their lesson plans but are
missing some key aspects. Some parts that are missing are goals, NYS standards,
assessment (rubric), and closure.
3. What is your opinion of the Candy is Dandy lesson structure?
I think the structure works well. I think that the only thing I would include is a spot for
how presentations would run and how you as the teacher would close off this project to
make sure everyone got out of it what you intended for them to.
4. What is your opinion of the Candy is Dandy lesson plan?
I like this lesson plan. I don’t know if it would take 5-8 hours to do it but it may take that
long if students don’t know how to use the specific computer programs.
5. What Excel functions are utilized?
The Excel functions that are utilized are average, sort, autoformat, and the various graphs
used to show the data.
6. Do you feel you would ever use this lesson?
Yes, I would use this lesson in my classroom with some minor tweaks to it to make it fit
what I need and the addition of some parts stated in questions 2 and 3.

B. Find a lesson plan on the internet for secondary mathematics that utilizes Excel. (The more unique the better. Insert a link on your Webpage to this new-found Excel lesson plan and answer the following question thoroughly in the "Dandy_Candy" Document.) http://www.microsoft.com/Education/endsmeet.mspx

  1. Briefly describe the lesson plan. This lesson plan is about budgeting. This is a great lesson not only for the mathematics part of it but for the real world aspect of when the students are living on their own. The students will choose a career and then choose monthly expenses such as rent, electric, food, and so on. Once this is done they will see if their expenses exceed their income and if so cut down on their expenses. After that, students will then have an unexpected expense such as their dog’s medicine which costs $150 and how to budget that in and what to take out. The students will then present their budget using PowerPoint.
  2. What Excel functions are utilized? The Excel functions that are utilized are using the spreadsheet form for organization, equations, and sum. Graphs will be used to show the percentage of expenses.
