Have you ever had a flat tire or a but ton come off on your clothes
as you are headed to work or school? Did you know how to fix it,
or did you have to call someone else to do it for you. Many
students graduating high school are n ot learning basic home skills
that can save them money and allow them to compensate for
things that happen each and every day.

My name is Ed Schwartz and I would like to speak to
everyone tody about why practical skills should still be
taught in high schools.

While I will not go in depth as to how to accomplish
these skills. Only to simply point out that skills such
as basic vehicle maintenance, some cooking skills, and
basic home skills can help save money and ensure
that you get to school or work ready to go.

In a recent survey conducted by the Atlanta Journal- Constitution
found that Sixty-eight percent of Am ericans believe schools should
offer more career-focused classes ov er honors classes; [while] just
21 percent would pick honors classes . In an interview with my
daughter, she stated that some clas ses were available but to get
into college these classes are put on the back burner.

Having the ability to crack a wrench can mean the difference
between stranded and on schedule when it comes to minor
roadside breakdowns.(Turner, 2015)1. Changing a tire.2.

DEFINITION 7 While getting to your destination is important being able to cook is an essential skill that can save people thousands of dollars each year by eating at home and not ordering food. Some parents would teach this at home, but many parents lack these skills also. TERM 8

DEFINITION 8 Meal planning can save you money by lowering the type and amount of food you need to buy. Also what foods can be reheated and used as leftovers. 1. What and how much to get at the grocery store 2. Food and cooking safety TERM 9

DEFINITION 9 Simple food preparation instructions for you to follow instructions in recipes and on ingredient boxes. 1. Measuring quantities and how to convert them 2. How to use appliances

DEFINITION 10 While all of the things we have discussed so far are important, home economics can affect credit scores and your financial stability.

Family and consumer services classes are usually offered in middle or high schools. However, most of these classes are not mandatory for students to take. (Parsons, 2014) TERM 17

DEFINITION 17 We have broadly covered some in-depth topics, and I encourage anyone who has questions to seek out someone that can help delve deeper into those issues. These include the topics we discussed such as automobile repair, cooking, and home economics. TERM 18

DEFINITION 18 I learned many of these skills from friends and family, but some were taught in school. This is important to me as I have a teenage daughter graduating this year and I want her to be prepared to handle life. TERM 19

DEFINITION 19 Knowing these skills can help you get and retain a job by knowing how to manage everyday situations that occur, therefore allowing new employees to show up on time, ready to work, while saving some money.
