STS-MODULE 1: EXERCISE 1
1. How did science shape society?
Since the dawn of time, science has paved the way for thousands of discoveries. Science became
the beginning of development for its contribution to knowledge. It is by science that new ideas are being
discovered, theories are becoming facts, and truths about the natural world are being revealed. With all
these newfound knowledge, societies have evolved. Societies developed in the ways suited to match the
advancements brought about by science and its wonders. Without science, the developments we have in
our societies now would have not been made possible.
2. How do social and human issues influence science?
With different social and human issues transpiring each and every day, such issues serve as a
challenge for science. In most cases, human issues tend to cling to science for solutions. That being said,
science looks for ways to resolve each issue that comes along their way. Social and human issues can help
in the discovery of new way to improve life within a society and can also be part of experiments that can
be conducted for the greater good. One issue at present for example would be the need for a vaccine to
fight of Covid19. Our scientists, challenged with such issue are putting their every knowledge in the field
of science to the test in order to find a solution to resolve such issue.
3. How do the political and cultural landscapes of the society affect the development of scientific
culture, science activities and science literacy?
Political and cultural landscapes affect the possible range of scientific culture development.
Since politics and culture is the basis of action in a society they greatly affect the development of
scientific culture when it comes to approval of certain areas of science. Science activities also is greatly
affected by the two landscapes as such activities are limited to what the two landscapes can allow.
Science literacy is also affected such that knowledge being taken in by the society must be that it won’t
bring great change to one societies culture and politics. Developments in scientific culture, science
acivities, and science literacy are limited to its ability to change minor feats on culture and politics.

4. Considering the current state of our society, do you think science literacy among people has

contributed to the growth of our economy?

With the current state of our society, yes, science literacy has contributed greatly to the growth of our economy. It is by science literacy that people even though falling apart have picked themselves up and discovered new ways; manipulating scientific societies, learning the ways of nature, and using these knowledge for the benefit of oneself and the economy. With the help of being literate in the field of science, one can easily adapt to the changes that science advancements have brought. Same as through with the economy. If people are literate, the economy would easily adapt to the changes.

5. How can science influence government policies?

Science can influence government policies in many ways. Since science is based on facts, it can serve as a pillar/basis in the coming up with well-structured and more reliable policies. With science and its factual data, policies can become more accurate and much more obeyed by the community. People tend to follow what is factual. They go with that which is true and already been proven. Science has proven a lot of things and it will continue to prove and prove many things.
