Foundations II Study Support
Materials to be covered:
Fu Organs
Please be able to identify their main functions and distinguish between them.
Please be able to identify the channels associated with the organs and their Five Phase. correspondence
(For example – the Stomach Fu is considered a Yangming organ and belongs to the Earth Element).
Please be able to identify which Zang organs they are paired with as well as their general location (Upper
Jiao, Middle Jiao, or Lower Jiao?).
6 Extraordinary Fu
Please be able to identify the major correspondences with each of the extraordinary Fu (For example –
bones are associated with the Kidney zang).
Regarding the uterus, please be able to identify the extraordinary vessels associated with the uterus, as
well as the role the zang organs and vital substances play in regulating it.
Shang Han Lun
Please be able to explain the basic theory of the Shang Han Lun, what it is attempting to describe in terms
of pathogenesis (how pathology arises).
Please be able to identify key signs and symptoms from each stage of disease progression in the Shang
Han Lun.
Please be able to differentiate patterns from each stage of the Shang Han Lun.
Wen Bing Lun
Please be able to explain the basic theory of the Wen Bing Lun, what it is attempting to describe in terms
of pathogenesis (how pathology arises).
Please be able to identify key signs and symptoms from each stage of disease progression in the Wen Bing
Lun.
Please be able to differentiate patterns from each stage of the Wen Bing Lun.
Study Suggestions:
Creating your own study materials, like making tables out of the information provided can be helpful,
especially with the disease patterns presented.
If you’re making a table, the suggested columns would be: Disease Stage/Level, Pattern Name, Signs and
Symptoms (highlight or underline the key ones), Tongue, Pulse
You can organize the tables by color coding them based on a variety of correspondences such as the
element associated with the name of the stage (SHL), or as a progression of severity (WBL)
Remember to go back and first understand the big categories (Stages/Levels) before trying to memorize
the details of the small categories (Disease Patterns)
Here is the naming convention proposed by the Shang Han Lun for organization:
Stage Qi Element
Taiyang Cold Water
Yangming Dry Metal
Shaoyang Summerheat Ministerial Fire
Taiyin Damp Earth
Shaoyin Heat Fire
Jueyin Wind Wood
