10.What is manual lymph drainage? A Manual Imph drainage or (MID) massage uses gentle, rhythmic pressure on the lymphatic system to detoxify and remove waste materials from the body more quickly. It reduces swelling and is used before and after surgery for pre- and post operative care. It is a very light touch. For example, moving down the side of the neck toward the collar-bone helps drain fluid from the face to the lymph drainage channel in that area. In some states, master estheticians are allowed to perform manual lymphatic drainage as part of their scope of practice 11.In what direction do you massage the muscles? You should always massage from muscle insertion to origin of the muscle to avoid damage to muscular tissues. Massage movements usually are performed upward and outward on the face and neck. 12.Why should you always have at least one hand on the client after you begin a facial massage? The sequence of massage movements is designed for a smooth and graceful flow from one movement into another. To keep the relaxing flow and connection, do not remove your hands from the client once you have made contact with the skin to begin the facial massage.Maintaining contact gives the client a sense of physical continuity that is very soothing and calming 13.How many times should you repeat the massage movements? 3-6 times per movement GLOSSARY Effleurage light, continuous stroking movement applied with the fingers (digital) or the palms (palmar) in a slow, rhythmic manner Friction invigorating rubbing technique requiring pressure on the skin with the fingers or palm while moving them under an underlying structure Manual lymph drainage gentle, rhythmic pressure on the lymphatic system to detoxify and remove waste materials from the body more quickly; reduces swelling and is used before and after surgery for pre- and post-op care Massage manual or mechanical manipulation of the body by rubbing, gently pinching kneading, tapping, and other movements to increase metabolism and circulation, promote absorotion. and relieve pain Petrissage kneading movement that stimulates the underlying tissues, performed by lifting squeezing and pressing the tissue with a light firm pressure Tapotement movements consisting of short, quick tapping, slapping and hacking mavements.
