An introduction to the art of painting. We will explore basic painting processes including direct painting,
glazing and scumbling, and wet on wet. The purpose of this course is to develop the student’s vocabulary
and understanding of the rich and varied options available to the painter.
Course Work: - class will work with oil paints for this class
Color mixing
The old master style – a still-life
Thick paint
Abstraction
Landscape
Portrait
Wrong painting
Materials:
Brushes - ¼” filbert hog bristle brush; ½ ” filbert hog bristle brush; ¾ inch flat hog bristle brush; 0 or 00
round brush for details; 1-1/2” to 2” cheap flat bristle brush
Paints - OIL Paints – large tube of titanium white
Small tubes – Cadmium red medium, Cadmium yellow medium, Ultramarine blue, burnt umber, and
another red, yellow, blue and brown of your choice. And either a green of your choice or a purple/violet of
your choice.
Alkyd Medium – 8 oz bottle of Liquin, or Galkyd, or store brand Alkyd painting medium.
Small Stand Oil
Disposable paper palette
Seven canvas boards – 12”x16”
Two glass jars with lids
Grading:
All of the work is done during class so attendance is essential
Attendance - 50%
Class participation – 40%
Quality – 10%
Safety: Students must learn and follow guidelines for safe material handling.
Any work left after the end of the quarter may be discarded.
New Art Department policy – students are required to visit the University Art Gallery at least once per
quarter.
