Systems Development Life Cycle Paige Bishop IT Jackie Burton January 12, 2006

A standard systems development life cycle (SDLC) consists of seven phases: planning, systems analysis, systems design, development, testing, implementation, and maintenance. Each of these phases is implemented in full before the next phase can be entered. This eliminates “undoing” large amounts of work (which also increases cost), which can happen if a process of structure is not followed. The first phase is the planning phase, which will entail developing a schedule, budget, and proposed type of information system. During this phase, detailed accounts of all other phases will be discussed and the process will have begun. The next phase is systems analysis. This is when an analyst determines what is needed from an IS by the company. The analyst will determine what needs to be addressed and how best to address it. This will help to determine what type of system, and how interactive, the system needs to be. Once the analyst has determined the needs and implementations of the system, he/she will then design a system to meet the needs of the company. Development occurs when the system is being built. Data, information, and retrieval abilities will be placed in the needed areas during this phase. Once the system is up and running, various tests will be performed to measure the accuracy, ability, and stability of the system. This phase is, of course, the testing phase. After rigorous testing and some troubleshooting generally occur, implementation is finally executed. The most sought after phase in a SDLC, this is where the system is put in place and used by the individuals that it was designed for. The final phase, an ongoing and never ending one, is the maintenance phase. Any “bugs” will be worked out and general upkeep will be performed, hence, the IT department.
