Identification and Characteristics

light yellow-white on belly.

!Long, slightly subterminal mouth with pharyngeal teeth.
!Length of 3.5 to 12 inches.
!Barbel at the tips of the maxillae.

Identification and Characteristics

Breeding Habits ! (^) Males ! (^) Head changes color to pink and blue. ! (^) Head becomes swollen with hump on top ! (^) The head becomes covered in up to 40 sharp tubercles between the eyes and on the snout. ! (^) Horn-like tubercles are used to defend nesting site ! (^) Creating the breeding trough. ! (^) Move stones with mouth, up to 30 feet. ! (^) Lasts 20 – 30 hours Mating Habits ! (^) Nest building and spawning occurs during late May and June. ! (^) Only one spawning period per year. ! (^) Takes place in the trough. ! (^) Eggs are covered with small gravel in the bottom of the nest. ! (^) Mature and spawning by year 3. ! (^) Lifespan between 4 – 5 years. ! (^) Other minnow species will invade and take over the nesting sites for reproduction. Habitat

! Large streams and small rivers.

! Fast, clean, and cool water.

! Most often found around submerged structures.
