Block the production of angiotensin II
causing vasodilation and urinary excretion of
sodium and water. Potassium is retained
Oral use only. Check drug
resource to determine
administration with or without
food. Given BID-TID for
hypertension. Given TID for
heart failure.
Potassium-sparing diuretics, supplements, or potassium-containing
salt substitues increases risk for hyperkalemia. Antihypertensives,
diuretics and nitrates increse risk for hypotension, NSAIDS decrease
effectiveness. May cause lithium toxicity. Food decreases the
absorption of captopril
tetragenic, hx of angioedema, allery to ACE inhibitors, hypotension,
Use with caution with decreased renal funtion, bone marrow
depression, or autoimmune disorders, cardiovascular disease, heart
falure, hyperkalemia, hyponatremia. Less effective in African
Americans and increased risk of angioedema
Severe hypotension (esp client with severe hypertension),
rash, metallic taste, increased serum potassium,
decreased WBC. Dry non-productive cough. Angioedema
may be life threatening
Hypertension, heart failure, diabetic
neuropathy, and left ventricular dysfuntion
after MI
start with low dose and gradually increase.
May hold diuretics at onset of treatment.
Assess BP after first dose (risk for
hypotension greatest). Prepare for IV fluid
therapy for hypotension. Assess for dry
cough (may be dose limiting). Report
angioedema immediately.Prepare for IV
admistration of epinephrine. Assess
potassium levels. WBC with diff. every
other week for first 3 months
Decreased BP, increased cardiac output, decreased
symptoms of diabetic neuropathy, increased left
ventricular function.
Warn of hypotension and to lay supine
if lightheadedness occurs. Report
metallic taste, decreased taste of
foods, dry cough, or rash. S/S of
allergic reaction should call 911.
Report palpatations, muscle twitching,
or parasthesia. Report sore throat or
symptoms of infection. Do not take if
pregnant or lactating
