TERM 7
Anatomic Kinesiology
DEFINITION 7
Study of muscle system
TERM 8
Biomechanics
DEFINITION 8
The application of mechanical principles to living organisms,
such as `humans, animals, plants and the functional basic
units of life, the cells.
TERM 9
Structural Kinesiology
DEFINITION 9
Science of movement
TERM 10
Anterolateral
DEFINITION 10
Front and to the outside
Sagital Plane
Divides body into right and left Bilateral
TERM 17
Frontal Plane
DEFINITION 17
Divides body into front and back Anterior/posterior
TERM 18
Transverse Plane
DEFINITION 18
Divides body into top and bottom Superior and inferior
TERM 19
Number of bones in body
DEFINITION 19
206 80-axial 126-appendicular (arms/legs)
TERM 20
Long Bones
DEFINITION 20
The long bones are those that are longer than they are wide,
and grow primarily by elongation of the diaphysis, with an
epiphysis at the ends of the growing bone.
Short Bones
Where a part of the skeleton is intended for strength and
compactness combined with limited movement, it is
constructed of a number of short bones, as in the carpus
(wrist) and tarsus (ankle), with the carpal and tarsal bones.
TERM 22
Flat Bones
DEFINITION 22
Flat bones are those bones which are found where the
principal requirement is either extensive protection or the
provision of broad surfaces for muscular attachment, the
bones are expanded into broad, flat plates, as in the cranium
(skull), the ilium (pelvis), sternum, rib cage, the sacrum and
the scapula.
TERM 23
Irregular Bones
DEFINITION 23
The irregular bones are bones which, from their peculiar
form, cannot be grouped as long bone, short bone, flat bone
or sesamoid bone.
TERM 24
Sesamoid Bones
DEFINITION 24
In anatomy, a sesamoid bone is a bone embedded within a
tendon. Used for leverage
TERM 25
Diaphysis
DEFINITION 25
The diaphysis is the main or mid section (shaft) of a long
bone.
Ankle Eversion
Turning sole of foot outward (Laterally)
TERM 32
Ankle
Inversion
DEFINITION 32
Surning sole of foot inward 90% of ankle sprains
TERM 33
Dorsal Flexion
DEFINITION 33
Flexion of the ankle
TERM 34
Plantar Flexion
DEFINITION 34
Extension of the ankle
TERM 35
Pronation
DEFINITION 35
Eversion or palm down
Supination
Inversion or palm up
TERM 37
Shoulder Depression
DEFINITION 37
Inferior movement, Returning to normal position
TERM 38
Shoulder Elevation
DEFINITION 38
Superior movement, Shrugging motion
TERM 39
Shoulder Protraction
DEFINITION 39
Forward and away from spine
TERM 40
Shoulder Retraction
DEFINITION 40
Backward and toward spine
Parallel Fibers
For range of motion
TERM 47
Flat (Parallel)
DEFINITION 47
Thin and broad (Abs) Allows spreading force over broad
areas
TERM 48
Fusiform
(Parallel)
DEFINITION 48
Spindle shaped (Bicep)
TERM 49
Strap
(Parallel)
DEFINITION 49
Long Parallel Focus power onto small target
TERM 50
Radiate
(Parallel)
DEFINITION 50
Triangular (Pecs) Combination of flat and fusiform
Pennate Muscles
Short fibers for power
TERM 52
Unipennate (Pennate)
DEFINITION 52
Run Obliquely from tendon on one side only
TERM 53
Bipennate (Pennate)
DEFINITION 53
Obliquely on both sides from tendon
TERM 54
Multipennate (Pennate)
DEFINITION 54
Several tendons with fibers runnung diagonally between
them
