Terri Nashe Professor Dugo Police Brutality essay ❖ Introduction The Topic that I will be informing you all today will be on police brutality. For some of you who aren’t to sure on what police brutality is here is what it means. Police brutality is defined as redundant physical aggression toward a person because of racial interrogations. When the police decide to use a deadly weapon that excels the interrogation that is not necessary, would be considered police brutality. Police Brutality began in the late 1800s early 1900s toward people in the lower socioecomic scale. Police brutality also occurred during the civil rights movements when activists would be attacked with water hoses and police dogs. This was very unfortunate towards family who has lost a loved one due to police brutality. Not many of us know this but, the most famous case of police brutality was on March 3 rd, 1991. ❖ Three cases on police brutality Not many of us know this but, the most famous case of police brutality was on March 3rd,
Rodney King is the most known police brutality case. Rodney King was caught speeding down the highway which he was spotted by the police. He did not want to get pulled over which will lead him to violate his parole. This led to him getting in a high-speed chase
through a residential area with officers which later cornered his car. The officers later used a taser multiple times for Rodney to get to the ground, hit him several times with batons and many more things. These actions led the officers to disable him. Riots during police brutality cases has only led to more deaths. During riots people have burned buildings and torn the community apart. This made the police to become violent and take more action then they need for riots to end. Eric Garner case, July 14, 2014 Staten island father of six, was killed by a NYPD officer. Eric was an asthmatic and the officer placed in an illegal chokehold. Eric felt as if the cops were always wanted to arrest him due to his appearance. He stated, “I’m tired of this, I didn’t do nothing, I’m minding my business officer.” While the officer placed Eric in the chokehold, Eric kept repeating “I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe.” Those where his last words before he took his last breath. His death was later ruled as a homicide. Sandra Bland 28 years old, July 13th, 2015 A minor traffic breach led to an arrest with Sandra Bland. During this time, Sandra was not resisting arrest but was questioning why she was being arrested. The officer got very physical with her and slammed her on the ground. While in jail, Sandra made a phone call to a friend stating that she was being “roughed up” by an officer. Three days later, she was later found dead, hanging from a privacy partition. Officers stated, “she was said to have hung herself with a plastic bad.” March 2016, the officer was fired and ineligible to be hired as an officer anywhere else.
It is sad to say that many people have lost their lives due to police brutality. Many families have lost a loved one due these excessive actions some officers have taken. It’s very disappointing that racism will never end, and people will never receive justice. If we all stand up for what’s right, its possible change will happen. But at least we are being heard rather than staying silent. ❖ 3 Facts on police brutality 69% of victims of police brutality in the U.S who are African American were suspects of non-violence crimes were unarmed. 10% of police officers account for 33.2 of all use of force incidents. 1 out of 3 African American kids are killed by police officers in any given year.
