Lab Report: Synthesis and Characterization of Adipic Acid by Yaghubi, Lab Reports of Organic Chemistry

The results of an organic chemistry lab experiment conducted by Yaghubi, where adipic acid was synthesized and characterized. The report includes the final mass of the product, theoretical yield, percent yield, melting point range, and IR spectrum with important peaks. Calculations are provided for determining the final mass, theoretical yield, and percent yield.

What you will learn

  • What is the percent yield of the synthesized adipic acid?
  • What is the final mass of the synthesized adipic acid?
  • What is the theoretical yield of adipic acid?

Analysis

  1. Provide the final mass of product after recrystallization (show Calculation). Filter paper: 0.32 g Buncher Top: 33.44 g Mass of (Buncher Top+filter paper + source) = 35.21 g Final mass = (mass of Buncher Top+filter paper + source) - (mass of Buncher Top + filter paper) Final mass of product = 35.21 g - (0.32g + 33.44 g) = 35.21 g - 33.76 g Final mass of product = 1.45 g
  2. Determine the theoretical yield of the product (adipic acid) in grams and show all of your Calculations. (Note: This is done just like you learned in general chemistry starting with the mass of the limiting reactant and converting it to the mass of the product). 2.05 g cyclohexene * (1 mol cyclohexene/80.15 g cyclohexene) * (1 mol adipic acid/ mol cyclohexene) * (146.14 g adipic acid/ 1 mol adipic acid) = 3.65 g
  3. Determine the percent yield of the product (show calculation). % yield of the product ( 1.45/3.65 ) * 100 = 39.73% % yield of the product is 39.7 %
  4. Provide the melting point range of the product. The melting point range of the product is 147.3 ∘ C - 148.3 ◦C.
